One Life To Live 7-21-08

The Buchannan Drama –

Jessica turned back into Tess after the death of her husband Nash, and vowed revenge against her sister Natalie and boyfriend Jarred, because she blames them for his death.  In an attempt to end their lives, she cut the brake lines on Natalie’scar and asked her and Jarred to go to her cottage to pick up some left over bottles of Nash’s wine.  Instead, Vicki, Natalie and Jessica’s mom met up with Natalie in the garage and offered to go instead, taking Natalie’s car.

Natalie and Jarred walked in from the garage to surprise Jessica (Tess) asking who went and in what car?  They replied mom went in my car.  Sure enough, Vicki arguing with long time rival Dorian, whom she picked up on the side of the road due to a broken down car, crashed.  The last thing Dorian said to her before the crash was she slept with her boyfriend Charlie.  Vicki still didn’t believe this, good call since it was a lie in the first place.  Never the less, Dorian looked over at Vicki and could not feel a pulse, she was dead.

Today, Dorian’s dead ex-husband returned to tell her how disappointed he was with her, told her she needs to live her own life and not under the shadows of Vicki.

Vicki went to Heaven, and had some reunions with Asa Buchannan, her ex-father-in-law, her dead grandchild, her alter ego and then the creator of the show.  Her grandchild asked her to forgive Charlie.  Which tells me she will be revived at the scene of the crash.  I also think the producer will show Vicki the entire process of deceit Dorian took against B.E., Charlie, and the mess Tess caused.  Look for her to come back in a vengeance.

Mandora And All the Craziness

Tana decided not to marry the Prince, which her a strained father and ex mobster said was her destiny, thus forcing him to live out his threat to kill Antonio, his brother and his girlfriend.  He also decided to behead Christina’s mom Tina and her impostor husband.

We left off with Antonio being taken to the dungeon with his girlfriend Tana.  Tina, her daughter and Antionio’sbrother were taken to a large waterfall, Tina once went over it and survived, but Tana’s father decided to make Tina watch with her daughters boyfriend as she is forced to go over the rocky waterfall tied to a boat for no chance of survival.

Blast To The Past

After Rex and Bo Buchannan got shocked on an electric fence, they were pulled back to the ranch in Texas.  When asked what year it was, Bo replied 2008, but found him and Rex stuck in 1968.  Everyone sees Bo as Asa, Rex as Bo and Jarred as Clint Buchannan.  They are confused on how this is happening and why?

To SUM IT UP

This marks the 40th anniversary of the show.  They are having flash backs and bringing back old “Ghosts” from the dead characters.  This should run into Tuesday, and maybe Wednesday.  It’s nuts to watch and nostalgic at the same time.

The “ART” Of Boxing – Edner “Cherry Bomb” Cherry

Edner “Cherry Bomb” Cherry is known for being a fierce competitor in the ring, knocking out opponents and winning championships, 5 to be exact.  Though boxing is an art form, he understands that art comes in many shapes and forms. We caught up with the champ in Sebring, Florida as he was about to have his face cast by our “Featured” artist Lynn McCray for a custom piece of pottery. Edner was eager to do an interview with us on his view of art and how it plays a part in our community.

Edner, what does art mean to you and how do you think it impacts our community?

A. Like boxing, it takes a lot of skill that not everyone can do.  It takes hours of training and vision.  It’s an expression of one’s thoughts put to life.  When the art is complete, and on display, it will impact the community by showing the artist’s viewpoint, it can change someone’s life and it improves the look and feel of where ever the piece is being displayed.

Art and education go hand in hand.  How important is education to you and why?

A.  Education is very important to me.  With sports you never know when an injury will end your career.  Its important to have a good education so you have something to fall back on, start a business, manage finances stuff like that. Stay in school and make the best of it, that’s the best advice I can give.

You are here today to have your face casted by Lynn McCray, are you doing this to help her out or do you just admire her work enough to want it done?

A.  A little of both, I have known Lynn for many years through our church so she is dear to me; but I also wanted to have a piece of her pottery with my face in it for my home, something to be proud of.

Like boxing, artist have dreams and inspirations, what advice do you have coming from a 5 time champion to give to those attempting those dreams.

A. Keep your head up and don’t give up.  There will be times when it seems like your goal is far from your reach, like everything is against you.  Keep pursuing it, believe in yourself and fight till you get what you set out for.  It may take longer for some than others, but hard work and dedication will lead you to the end result.

Artists like sports heroes need strength to keep going, Where do you find your inner strength to keep going?

A.  I believe in myself and my abilities. As a young kid, people pushed me to do what i do, and so friends and family are my biggest strength to keep striving to be the best I can be.

What is your greatest accomplishment to date, it can be with your boxing career, it could be with something else, but when you die, what do you want to be most known for?

A.  I would say being a good husband to my wife, being a great father to my children above all.

Following the interview, I watched Edner have his face casted, the first step, to be forever immortalized in clay.  It was an amazing experience to not only watch this amazing fighter work with our featured artist for July, but to get to know him as a person and see his views on art.  This just proves that art does touch our lives no matter what we do, it impacts us in more ways than we know and art is often taken for granted.

When the final product is complete on Edner Cherry’s face cast pottery we will bring it to you live in our gallery!

Please visit his web site www.ednercherry.com for history, bio, and video of the champ in action.

Meet some of the Tampa Flugtag Teams

We were able to briefly interview a handful of the Flugtag teams, and there strategies are about as diverse as their flying machines!

The first group we spoke to was By The Beard of Zeus. Each member is an engineering student at UF who all have a good understanding of lift, aerodynamics, and all the other sciences necessary to make things fly. Chris, the team’s captain, carried most of the conversation, but various other members chimed in as well.

When asked about their name, they explained that they decided to go with a Greek theme. They did clarify that the glider would not be a giant flying beard, but actually would be a set of feathered wings. They decided to go with the wing idea when recalling the story in Greek mythology, about Icarus. Chris went on to explain how “Icarus received a great pair of wings from his father so that he could fly, but he crashed and burned.”

Chris had seen videos of past Flugtags, and new he had to participate when he heard that it was coming to Tampa. He sent out an e-mail to the whole school of engineering in May, and soon had a team. They had about two and a half months to come up with a design for their craft and build it. The team has come up with a design that, as far as they know, has not been done before: a fixed-wing paraglider with an airfoil. Although they do not intend to test fly the craft, one crew member said “theoretically it should fly. Well, fall slowly”

We also spoke to the pilot, John. He loves doing crazy things and extreme sports, and is an avid surfer. John admitted that he has no flying experience, but does have ample experience breaking bones. “I’m ready for the crash portion.”

By the Beard of Zeus plans on winning all four categories. They feel that they have a craft the looks great and will out fly the competition. They hope that their toga uniforms and skit is going to win the crowd over too. It sounds like this team really means business.

Side Splitters Comedy Club – Tampa Starts To Laugh

Since the early 1990s, Side Splitters Comedy Club has been one of the premier places in Tampa to enjoy stand up comedy from both amateurs and professionals alike. The walls are filled with the comp cards of these numerous great performers. Side Splitters Comedy Club even was the birthplace to a few popular comedians, most notably Larry “The Cable” Guy. This was the feat that helped turn Side Splitters into the club it is today.

It wasn’t long before the owners realized the potential this club had, not only for the Tampa Bay area but aspiring comedians too. For years they held an open mic night, where anyone who brought in some of their own people could get on stage and perform. This was later revamped by the owners of the club to be a competition that would make Side Splitters Comedy Club the number one spot in Tampa for amateur comedian’s to develop.

Now the Open Mike competition is a 6 round contest that birth’s one winner who receives a $1000.00 prize pot. This competition is also heavily scouted for comedians who show they are ready to take their act to the next step. If a comedian looks like they have an organized act, write their own material and are moving toward a professional status, Side Splitters will host a special event for them called the “Stand Up Stand Up Comedian Competition.”  Similar to the Open Mic, the winner will still get a $1000.00 prize, but they also get a paid gig in another city.

Side Splitter’s doesn’t stop there for amateur comedians. They created a workshop that the owner says takes the comedians from “soup to nuts.” In other words, they will make comp cards, show how to hold the mic, and stand on stage, help tighten up the act and learn promotion and networking.

So with the development of these programs and workshops, Side Splitter’s Comedy Club is the place to be if you are an inspired comedian looking to break into the market. Before you decide to jump in, they gave us some simple tips to follow that will make your start easier and will be information needed down the line anyway.

  1. Get yourself a website, if not a website at least a MySpace page.  Everyone is on the Internet; it’s a great way to promote yourself.  Without one, “you might as well be dead.”
  2. Have some tapes of some of your act. Taped at your home, or something you have done on stage preferably, this will help the booking agent see where you stand, and what your act is about.
  3. Don’t be shy to promote yourself.
If you think Side Splitters Comedy Club can help you, their offices are open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  Located at 12938 North Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, FL 33618, or call them at (813) 960-1197. You can also get all the information you need at www.sidesplitterscomedy.com
If performing stand-up is not for you, don’t worry, they would love for you to come fill the seats and laugh the night away!

Vans Warped Tour ’08 – “Story Of The Year”

I attended the Vans Warped Tour ’08 in Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg, overlooking the beautiful St. Pete Pier.  The sky was overcast and looked like the heavens were going to open up at any second and rain on our parade. Did I mention the humidity was fierce? None of that stopped these die-hard music lovers from attending the festivities.

The band I went to see was taking the stage at 4:00 pm, so while I was there, I took up another show starting at 3:30. That band was “Story Of The Year” out of St. Louis, Missouri.  I must say I am not a person who loves heavy metal music, but this band was fantastic.  When they took the stage, there were about 400 people waiting for their performance, and when the music started there wasn’t one person standing still.  There were mosh pits (one of which this particular reporter was in), body surfing, and bottles being thrown all around. The experience of just watching the show was INSANE.

Story Of The Year not only has a great sound, their stage presence was remarkable.  I witnessed two of the guitarists, stand on an elevated part of the stage, with their guitars on, jump off, doing a back flip. Once they landed they threw their guitars to each other and started playing where they left off!  That particular stunt sent chills down my neck.

After the events that night, I went and did some research on this band. I found out ”Story Of The Year” has toured with the likes of Linkin Park, Chemical Romance and The Used, in tours like the Vans Warped Tour (past and present) and The Taste of Chaos Tour.  This band is for real, and they are rocking America by storm!

They have a brand new album released called “Black Swan” by Epitaph Records available now on iTunes and in stores everywhere.  You can purchase the CD and check out the band on their web site www.storyoftheyear.net

Tommy Blaze – Side Splitters Comedy Club

A veteran of the comedy stage, Blaze has appeared in every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse, and doghouse in the country.

In addition to comedy clubs, private corporate events, casinos, cruise ships and colleges, Tommy was a series regular on the nightly comedy series, The Newz, appeared in the hit show Friends, and has starred in the movies Rumpelstiltskin and Viewer Discretion Advised.

His comedy is opinionated, thoughtful, controversial, and admittedly one-sided. If you are married, single, divorced, parents, gay or lesbian, confused, young, desperate, misguided, lost or easily offended, then you need Tommy.

Dont miss the Tampa Bay Red Bull Flugtag!

They say “Red Bull gives you wiiings”, and we’re going to put that to the test. This Saturday, July 19, the Red Bull Flugtag comes to Downtown Tampa for a fantastic day of home made flying machines getting launched high over the river, and eventually plummeting into the water. You absolutely must come out and see this no tickets required, FREE event.

For the teams the rules are simple. Make your plane fly the farthest with: no engines or energy sources other than human-power, no more than 30 feet in width and no more than 450 pounds including it’s pilot. Other than that, the 40 Flugtag teams are given the freedom to build their aircraft with any shape, material or theme that they choose. Each team will take a turn pushing their glider off of a 30 foot high platform over the river and then try to pilot the glider as far as possible. Currently, the longest flight is 195 feet and was accomplished 7 years ago in Austria. On top of trying to fly 196 feet, each pilot must also avoid nose diving straight into the water. The ideal landing would be a gentle, belly-down landing. After speaking with some of the participating teams it sounds like most of them will not be test flying their craft until the big day, and some predict that they may end up nose diving or even flipping upside down.

As if watching 40 home made flying machines fall into the water isn’t entertaining enough, a celebrity panel of judges are going to make sure the day is even better. Not only are the contestants being judged on the longest flight, but also on their teams showmanship on stage, the aesthetic creativity of their craft and a “fan favorite” vote, which will require fans to use text messaging to vote for their favorite team (much like American Idol). Some of the teams we caught up with are planning on winning over the crowd with short productions before their flights, such as skits and dances that fit with their glider’s theme. At this event we’re going to see gliders that look like a giant flip flop, a pig, a speedboat, a furry boot and even a flying Cuban sandwich.

Flugtag is a German word for “Flying Day”, and is pronounced ‘Floog-Tog’. The first Red Bull Flugtag was hosted in Vienna, Austria in 1991. The competitions are now held all around the world. This will be the first time it has come to Tampa. This year there will also be an event hosted in Chicago and Portland.

The ramp and seating area will be near City Park in front of the Tampa Convention Center. The event will be completely free and the gates will open at 11am, the first flight will begin at 1pm. There will be other entertainment throughout the morning, and there may also be one or two Red Bull vendor’s setup, all though that is not confirmed!

One Life To Live – 7-11-08

Manning Baby-

There are so many charecters involved with this juicy plot.  As young Star Manning made the adult decision to give her baby up for adoption to a family she knows will take care of it, her boyfriend and the babies father, Cole, is furious over the decision.  Star decieded to give the baby up for adpotion to Marcie McBain and her husband, who once adopted Sam, Star’s brother, before they knew his real identity.  As you all remember Todd, Stars father, fought in court and legally took him away from the McBains and Marcie kidnapped Sam to protect him from Todd.  These two are mortal enemies.

Cole felt he had no where to turn to keep the baby, so he went to the most unlikely source to keep the baby.  Todd Manning, Stars father.  This man tried killing Cole and almost destroyed his daughter and raped Cole’s Mother.  This set off a time bomb and now that Todd knows Star wants the McBains to have his grand child he vowed to destroy everyone that helps in that process, including Star, his wife Blair, and the McBains.  It’s a heated drama that will probably end up in someone’s death or incarsaration.  Funny thing is, Cole is trying to keep the baby because he no longer has a family, but he also has no job and is only 17.  His chances of keeping this baby now are even less than if he just allowed Star to do what she wanted to in the first place, and give the baby to the McBains where he could visit the baby.

Gigi and Rex

At Adriana and Rex’s wedding Gigi stood up hoping to tell Rex that he is the father to her son, unfortunately all she could do was tell her real feelings for Rex, which got her sucker punched by Adriana.  Rex still married Adriana, but found out two days later that Adriana was lying to him about Gigi and split up with her.  On the 4th of July, Rex spilled his true feelings for Gigi and as she was about to tell Rex he was the father of Shane, Brody and Shane came and interrupted.  Rex and Gigi did kiss passionately before the two arrived confirming her feelings for Rex too.  Brody now wants to be Shane’s dad, and told Rex to get lost, even though he knows Rex is the real dad.  I forsee this plot coming to an end real soon and Rex and Gigi will get back together and Rex can take his place as Shanes “Real” dad.  Brody on the other hand I think has feelings for Gigi and won’t make this easy.

The Buchannans

With the take over of B.E. by Dorian Lord, at the hands of Natalie, and Jarred’s lies, the family lost B.E.  They are working to get the company back legally, but it comes with twists and turns.  It wouldn’t be a soap if there wasn’t.

Nash is dead from the take over, by Jarred trying to defend Natalie.  Jessica’s alter ego personality “Tess” came out and is falsely wooing Natalie and Jarred into her unknown scheme.  As it stands now she is trying to get them to move back into Natalie’s mom’s home with her, “To keep the family together.”  Natalie agreed.

Bo Buchannan finally decided to marry Lindsey, and at the alter his X-wife and Clint, his brothers new girlfriend Nora dropped a bomb shell that Lindsey faked insanity to avoid jail for killing Spencer Truman.  Bo broke off the wedding, and the entire family is furious at her for breaking Bo and Lindsey up.  Nora has wanted Lindsey’s blood for years and now finally has it.  Nora didn’t stop there, she had her rearrested for the murder and it looks bleak for Lindsey.  Nora will probably lose her whole family over this, but Bo and Clint need her to help them get the company back, since she is the D.A.

“In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” – Allman Brothers

Sometimes songs have a meaning, sometimes they don’t, and sometimes we will never know what a song was about.  As I traveled through Macon, Georgia visiting my father, he took me to a place where the song “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” started where life ends: a cemetery called “Rose Hill Cemetery.”

Everyone dreams of being idolized in a song. Women or men who are portrayed in the harmony of a hit song is the ultimate respect, and must be someone the writers thought highly of.  So what impact did Elizabeth Reed have on this band?

If you don’t know, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was written by Macon’s own Allman Brothers Band.  A group Georgians adore, and the town of Macon idolizes.  You would figure that when the band was traveling from pub to pub making public appearances, Elizabeth Reed must have been their number one fan, a girlfriend or someone very special to the Allman Brothers.  Why else would they immortalize her in song?  The truth is, Elizabeth Reed never met the Allman Brothers, and they never knew her personally yet she did play a huge part in the success of this great American legend.

In reality, Elizabeth Reed was the wife of Briggs F. Napier, and she died in 1935, almost 30 years before the Allman Brothers would even pick up a guitar.  She is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery located in downtown Macon. It is a beautiful cemetery filled with Civil War heroes, state senators, and other dignitaries of the town. Its vast landscape has rolling hills, and is bordered by a train used by the slaves for the Underground Railroad. It’s this cemetery, the Allman Brothers loved to visit and play their music in.  Yes, you heard me right; they loved to go into the cemetery, bring some friends, and play some music while downing a few cold ones.

Elizabeth Reed’s grave happened to be the spot of choice for the Allman Brothers.  Where she is buried is perfect for what they were looking for acoustically. The wall of the family plot is raised from the slope below making it a great little stage.  The head of the plot is surrounded by another small hill making the acoustics powerful.  And if you look at the grave, they could sit on her stone and not get dirty since they didn’t have to sit on the grass.  It was truly perfect, and people would come every week to hear them practice some of their legendary songs we all know today, and had a grand ol’ time.

So even though she never met the brothers, she never even got to hear their music; nor be wooed by the fact they named a song after her; she greatly impacted the band. America may not have even known the Allman Brothers today without her. They felt they could not honor her in any better way than making a song dedicated to her.  Some Maconites swear to this day, it’s at that grave that the Allman Brothers wrote and perfected their hit songs to propell them to stardom. Elizabeth Reeds grave is the “alleged” start of it all.

Sadly, on October 29, 1971 Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident crashing into a truck.  He is laid to rest in the same cemetery as Elizabeth Reed.  Today his grave is highly guarded and surrounded with a spiked cast iron fence, covered in axle grease to keep people from jumping the fence.  He returned to the place he forever loved to play in, and shall forever rest in peace in the spot some say the Allman Brothers formed.  If you ever get to go to Macon, visit this famous cemetery and see Duane Allman and Elizabeth Reed, knowing this is where it all started.  Rose Hill Cemetery is free to visit from sunrise to sunset.  I suggest since the cemetery is so large that you bring someone you know that knows the layout, because the streets are VERY narrow and hard to navigate cars through.

Hell’s Kitchen – The Winner

We all knew it was going to be a crazy finale, you had two of the most unlikely candidates competing for the spot as Ramsay’s Executive Chef at his new London – LA Restaurant.  We all knew some of the horrible chefs who competed would be coming back to help these two candidates, but which ones?  What we saw in this finally would surprise us and, quite frankly, make this finale one for the books that we will talk about for years to come.

Week of June 28th

Christina – Set a record on Hell’s Kitchen because the women won almost all the challenges, but when they went to individual challenges, she won three consecutive giving her 9 total victories in the challenge department. Christina wasn’t the most qualified, as she was “just” a culinary student, everyone from Day One wanted her out, especially Jen; but she used that to her advantage and put her heart into every performance and made it to the Final 2.

After Corey was eliminated, she went to her room to create her “OWN” menu.  This menu was extremely important as it defines her as a chef.  Christina amazingly did it before the sunrise the next day.  She created her menu with simple yet tasteful dishes, and if you ever watched Kitchen Nightmares or know Ramsay at all, you will know she is doing exactly what he would do… keep it simple.

She then met with an interior designer to design her side of Hell’s Kitchen.  She chose earth tones to create a relaxing atmosphere: soft couches and chairs and windows that had murals of the city painted behind the frames.  It was going to be beautiful.

Following the interior designer, she met with Jean-Phillipe to get maître d’ outfits.  She refused to choose any of the examples.  She said she wanted something someone would wear everyday, comfortable and down to earth.  Jean-Phillipe disagreed but made her wishes a reality.

Petrozza – Ramsay said he was by far the messiest cook on Hell’s Kitchen, but he rarely ever hit the bottom two, unlike Christina.  He maintained a level ego and even nominated himself for the cutting block one time gaining the respect of Ramsay and made him a candidate for the finals for sure.

Petrozza had a hard time coming up with a menu, and even though he had all night to come up with one, Petrozza, unlike Christina, decided to go to bed.  In the morning, he was shocked to find out Christina had her menu complete.  He got some help with one of the sous chefs working on the show to pound out a very elaborate and risky menu, but (if successfully executed), would make him the candidate to win Hell’s Kitchen.

After making his menu, he met with the interior designer and came up with something right out of NYC for his dining room.  It has a brick veneer, flowers, and great padded booths… accented perfectly by a fireplace. It looked like a loft in the Soho district.

Ironically, when Petrozza met with Jean-Phillipe, he managed to choose the outfit Christina HATED. Showing how exactly opposite these competitors are.

The Challenge

After all the prep work was ready, Gordon Ramsay took them to his restaurant in New York for their final challenge.  They were to make their signature dishes that would be judged by the Executive Chefs from 6 of Ramsey’s restaurants from around the world.  The last few challenges have been a point or two difference from Petrozza and Christina.  This week would prove no different.  Tied at 2, the tie-break came from the boss of the London- LA restaurant where they will be the executive chef.  He chose Petrozza, ending Christina’s winning streak and giving Petrozza the first choice for his team.

Gearing Up For Next Week

After returning from New York, Christina and Petrozza met the former teammates that would be helping them win Hells Kitchen.  Returning was:  Ben, Jen, Matt, Corey, Louross, and Bobby.  The first choice for Petrozza was Bobby and Christina chose Corey.  Petrozza then chose Ben, Christina chose Louross, leaving Matt and Jen.  Neither Petrozza or Christina wanted anything to do with the remaining two, but we all had to wait for the Grande Finale to see who was chosen last.

July 8, 2008

Back to the teams, Petrozza opted for Jen for his last pick, and Christina was pleased to take Matt for her team rather than Jen.

Everything started off well, except for Christina who was not impressed with her kitchen layout.  She didn’t like the stripes.  The interior designer came up with a compromise and painted them chocolate which made her dining room breathtaking. Petrozza wasn’t free from stress, the designer was unable to contact the people padding Petrozza’s booths. Panicking, they arrived with 15 minutes to spare.

While prepping the food, and Petrozza out of the kitchen dealing with his designer, Jen got some of the biggest set of balls ever, and asked Gordon Ramsay for a letter of recommendation.  This not only floored her team, but the Red Team as well.  Ramsay just ignored her and went on dealing with the preparations of tonight’s service.  No contestant has EVER asked for a letter of recommendation, it just goes to show how petty she is, and how she again tried to take the spotlight away from her own team leader.

ChristinaThe dinner service went well, all tables were served, all patrons happy.  Some slight mishaps came with Matt’s undercooked fish, and Jen’s inability to work with the team, but both Petrozza and Christina bounced back and made it into a success.

In the end, Ramsay was very pleased, saying there were far more ups than downs.  He said it would be a very hard decision, and it was.  Christina and Petrozza said goodbye to their team and went upstairs to await their fate.

Ramsey summoned them to the famous doors.  Each contestant grabbed the handle and awaited the chance to turn it. Christina said, ”good luck,” to Petrozza and Petrozza looked so sick to his stomach, he simply nodded in the affirmative.  When Ramsay counted to three, each contestant turned their door handle…

Christina’s door opened and she won Season 4 of Hell’s Kitchen!  Her parents were in tears, her team elated that she won. Ramsay made the absolute right choice to win Hell’s Kitchen based on pure potential for the long-term success of his new London restaurant.

CONGRATULATIONS CHRISTINA!
