Jason Hahn- Preserving Time

January 31, 2009

Welcome back to The Expressionist Magazine

osprey_fd_102605_007Nature’s majesty is both tranquil and breathtaking; the life that breathes wonder into our minds. How is it possible that something so grand can also be so fragile? For that, we must sit and take in every vision, every smell that mother nature gives us and never take it for granted. If only we could preserve this beauty in a timeless manner that would not disrupt the circle of life. Jason Hahn found the answer through photography and captures the intense color spectrum and grace with his work.

Hahn is a hunter in a sense, except he does not kill what he shoots. Yet, he still captures the body and soul of the prey he hunts. As a nature photographer, the artist needs strong patience. This is probably the most important part of his job, besides his equipment, for nature doesn’t jump on cue. A photographer of nature can sit all day and not get a bite, just like a hunter. When nature strikes, he must have split second reflexes and put his skills to the test because that one moment can change so quickly. This is something neither Hahn nor life can return because what he misses could be lost forever. Hahn doesn’t need to worry about that because he does it right the first time.

His photography is absolutely breathtaking, with birds in flight carrying their meal in perfect color and clarity. His sunsets captured at the right moment show the effervescence of orange, blue and yellow.  This heavenly vision fades to black in the tranquil death of a day in anticipation of the birth of a new day tomorrow. All these scenes are captured flawlessly on his photo paper canvas.

Hahn has shot around the United States, but now shoots in his home state of Florida mostly. This talented photographer is able to capture the rugged terrain this large beach has to offer. With the Everglades, Lake Okeechobee, miles of sandy beaches, bird aviaries and the massive reptiles we call gators, there is plenty of subject matter for Hahn to explore and capture.

Hahn’s photography has been included in magazines such as the Outdoor Photographer, Defenders Magazine, New Floridian and Kiteboarding just to name a few. Hahn’s work has also placed in the top 100 and helped him rank 4th overall in the ICF-2008 Pro-Tour Competition. The award winning photo is called, “Damselflies Sharing A Stick.”

hahn_04_03Artist’s Statement on “Damselflies Sharing A Stick:”

“I found a small pond on the ranch I was photographing for a few days, and it had hundreds of these damselflies flying around it. As they flew in search of mates, they would briefly land on small bits of grass poking out of the water. To capture this image I laid on the bank of the pond, in the shoreline mud with my elbows in the water; holding my camera just above the surface of the water to get a low angle on the flies. I prefocused on this small piece of straw poking out of the water and waited till damselflies landed. I was fortunate to have two land on the same piece of straw and had a few moments of them facing each other.”

Hahn’s love for nature and photography show as he has made himself into a published and award winning photographer, a hunter of nature without ever having to kill one animal or insect, and he can admire his capture with others for centuries to come. Hahn has one magnificent eye with an artistic touch that we know you will see once you set eyes on his gorgeous work.

Check him out at www.hahnnaturephotography.com . On Hahn’s website you can see many of his pieces and learn a bit more about this phenomenal artist.

Shattered Spine- Rock That Rattles Your Bones

January 31, 2009

l_adea461914334e4fabe52d79598f7796What do you get when you combine four southern born and bred men together that love to play music? Why, you get a thrash metal band. Did you think I was going to say a country music band? Stereotypes are so funny because it’s one perception of what should be and Shattered Spine destroys all stereotypes about this band. They just play what they love to play and it shows the south isn’t just country anymore.

Their music is a bit more rough than your general metal or rock band and is designed to get you on the floor, thrash your hair and head around and crowd surf. The heavy hitting guitar rifs this band creates with the strong bone chilling vocals makes them a band worthy of Wayne’s World or Beavis and Butt-Head. They are, however, one of the few thrash metal bands that write love songs which shows they do have a softer side.

If you were to look at these guys, you would have no idea they were in a metal band. Their looks fooled me as well, as I actually thought they were in a country band. They wear camouflage, boots and jeans, and drive in pick-up trucks that you would need a ladder to get in. Simply put, they are country all the way.  However, once I heard their music, I was shocked and amazed. They have a great sound that will take them far. Their talents also surpass their stage and musical performance and they write their own material as well. Song writing is tough, especially thrash metal, which make this band even more impressive in my eyes.

Despite their persona, this is a great bunch of guys who love to have fun. Having fun is actually how they came up with the name of their band. It came about because one of the band members was riding on a four wheeler with an ex-girlfriend when he went through a dried up river bed. After they made it through that rough terrane, his girlfriend said, “Damn, you almost shattered my spine.” That sentence stuck well and they forever named their band, Shattered Spine.

Right now this local band from Plant City, Florida hooked up with a management company by the name of All Souls Unlimited, and the partnership has proven to be successful. They are touring around the state of Florida, specifically the  Tampa Bay area, playing in front of large and small crowds. Their audiences include just about anyone who wants to listen and “RAWK OUT.” They have some favorite hot spots such as the Brass Mug, Pegasus Lounge and others throughout the Tampa Bay area. This group plans to play on until they retire. This is the  true goal of any musician who has it rolling through their veins. Shattered Spine  also had an appearance on Party 95.5′s live web show on January 14th where you could see the guys up close and personal, unlike they are on the stage.

In 2009, another goal for this band is to get a record cut for their fans. Right now all they have is a live cut version from one of their shows here in the Tampa area. With a real CD made, you will be able to hear exactly how amazing this band is. You will be able to get a better understanding of how strong their singer’s voice is and how insane their guitar riffs and drum beats are. I know their CD will only help propel them into the future faster than they could ever imagine. For now, we encourage you to see this band live, or at least listen to their music on their MySpace page. If you like hard core rock, they will deliver.

Shattered Spine can be reached through their MySpace page which also lists some of their upcoming tours. That page is, www.myspace.com/shatteredspine. If you want to book them, contact Josie at All Souls Unlimited, their management company, by calling ***-***-****.  We also had a sit down interview with the band live before a show and the podcast can be downloaded through iTunes or our Podcast column on the magazine.  You may also listen to it there without downloading anything.

I think it’s best to end this article with a quote from one of my favorite TV shows growing up. “Yes, Butt-Head! This rocks!” “Beavis, this band kicks a@$!”

Carla Caison- Work Your Body

January 31, 2009

pinkwallsmNestled in the modest rural setting of Florida’s Panhandle, lives a woman with high ambitions to someday perform on stage or on film for her audience.  Acting has always been her dream, but it was acting that led Carla Caison into a field she never thought possible, modeling.

If you would have told Caison growing up that she was going to model, she probably would have laughed at you.  She always felt herself to be a tomboy; never a girly-girl who dressed up in clothes and make-up.  Instead, she loved sports and fitness and wore sweats and t-shirts; a far cry from what a model would wear.

Caison has the skinny, tall body that fashion and scouting agents look for in a model.  She’s beautiful and charismatic which play right into the hearts of the camera.  She got her break in this field while auditioning for an acting part. However, the director wanted her to do some modeling instead.  Caison was taken back a bit by this but decided to give it a try and since then, fell in love with the industry.

bwredsmIt’s a hard industry, filled with rejection and criticism and people trying to make you into something you’re not.  It’s an art, where you are the subject and medium.  The model must set the mood and he/she must play the part to make the work of art speak volumes. It is the model’s movement and  expression that are critical to making people believe what they are trying to convey.  This is very similar to what paints do, except the emotion and mood are set by the mind and hand of the artist who portrays his vision through this medium.

Despite the fact she has encountered rejection and criticism, Caison believes that you should not alter yourself for a part.  In today’s modeling world there are plus size models as well as petite models, conveying beauty is in the person, not the body. You shouldn’t change yourself for a part, you change the part to fit you by finding a gig that represents who you are.  Be true to yourself, Caison emphasizes, because if they don’t like you for you, then it wasn’t meant to be.

Since her modeling career bloomed unexpectedly one fine day, she has found herself in advertisements, magazines and even in the phone book.  Carla Caison is what you call an all around artist, dabbling in many mediums the art world has to offer.  Besides modeling, she paints and acts.

Acting is still a passion for Caison. She is currently doing plays and still auditioning for various acting gigs.  This is probably something Caison will never give up by the excitement she gets in her voice when speaking about acting.  Good for her, I say! You must do what you love and by doing what you love, you have more fun which shows to those around you.

Caison’s advice for aspiring models or actors is to get a good set of head shots, acquire experience through TFP (time for photos) shoots, and to not be afraid to try new things because it gives you a well rounded portfolio.

If you want to get in touch with Caison for booking, contact her through her MySpace page at, www.myspace.com/bookseagie

Don’t forget to check out her podcast, which is located on our podcast link or simply download it through iTunes.

Angeline D’Balentine- Turning Japaneesa

January 31, 2009

geisha_ink1The world has been around so long we can’t even give an exact date of its creation.  Through those years, cultures have defined countries, people and religions. Each part of the world has had some impact on the future generations and those ideals bestowed from one generation to another, have blended through into the world today. These ideals were passed down through teachings, literature and art. Art has helped shape our communities and make this world unique.  That is exactly what Angeline D’Balentine found to be fascinating, thus inspiring her to teach and document through art.

D’Balentine is a multi-talented artist, meaning she uses a variety of mediums and does them very well. She has studied many different cultures and religions from around the world, taking what she’s learned and converting it to art.  D’Balentine is able then to document the world as she sees it and how it impacts her life.

The most recent example of this is her phenomenal series, “Japanese Art.” This series is inspired by Japan, a country and culture that has always amazed D’Balentine. We know the dynasties that have ruled over this small Pacific Island and how much this culture has impacted our world. They have founded alternative natural medicines and have developed forms of karate. Japan had a major impact in World War II, and forever changed how we look at weapons of mass destruction. They are the innovators of great technology such as video games, televisions, cars and so much more. Japan has in some way, touched our lives because of something we know and love and hold dear to our hearts. D’Balentine takes this impact and puts it to art, for all to see and be wowed by.

m_48447dc74e2ad5d40c63a0ec61189fb7D’Balentine’s Japanese collection right now only has four particular pieces. Those pieces are mixed-media since they are a collaboration of photography, graphic art, paint and pencil. Some of these pieces have a few mediums together, while others have just one.  Each piece in D’Balentine’s collection is very unique and individual in their own right. They are amazing pieces that glorify Japan’s culture and history.

A personal favorite of mine from the series is a Japanese Geisha, armed with a Katana sword, showing her power and mystique. On the other hand, the Geisha’s kimono shows her beauty and glorified feminine physique. She reminds me of a character in the movie, Mulan. In this movie, there is a very brave and powerful young woman who wants to protect her father. This was in a time where it was forbidden for women to join the Emperor’s army; a great portrayal of both sides of the Japanese woman. I love the intricate detail on the border and fans that line the left of the picture. This is very similar to what you would see with authentic Japanese art, from composition, to colors, and detail.

D’Balentine also has a few other series that she has worked on over the years. She loves drawing realistic portraits, to be as detailed as a painting would be. Most of these are done with pencil, but the end result is simply a stunning hand drawn portrait you’d swear was a photograph.

In 2008, D’Balentine also illustrated a children’s book titled, “If Everyone Were Just Like Me.” This project she is very proud of because it’s a story that gives a lesson to children, and her art work will help a child retain the lesson that the book gives. Helping children and giving them something they can enjoy and love is a spectacular feeling.

I talked to this amazing artist and found that her goal for her work is to document cultures, tell of their wonderful uniqueness, and hope that it inspires younger generations to look into other cultures and religions and understand what makes them so unique. D’Balentine would also like to see her art inspire others to pursue art as an outlet.

We think you will love Angeline D’Balentine’s art.  Currently, she is working on a web site but you can see some of her pieces on her MySpace page at www.myspace.com/arhazime.

A Lucky Day Later- Rockin’ The West

January 31, 2009

l_e108f7ed263041489d033c1fb3e79a9cThrough struggles, emerges triumph for those who don’t give up.  Passion is the key to achieving goals, for it keeps your eyes from straying from the prize even if the world is blowing up around you.  That is the case for a band out of Los Angeles, California whose life struggles and misfortunes have turned them into believers of themselves and renewed their passion to keep them going.

They call themselves A Lucky Day Later, but the name was formed from a tragic misfortune for the lead singer, Alicia.  Her mom was very sick with cancer, when around St. Patrick’s Day, she succumbed to her illness.  It’s not easy for anyone to deal with this situation, and Alicia felt lost.  She says it took everything in her power not to take her own life and join her mom, but she knew her mother would not have that.  Instead, she had a light beam shine on her head and thus came up with the band’s name.  A Lucky Day Later means, “getting through the hardest day of your life no matter how much you want to give up and just put an end to all the hurting.”

Now their passion is their music, and it’s starting to make an impression for this young band.  They describe their band as “sensual-sexual, all-punked-out, epic rock band, destined to be signed in 2009 because of the honest lyrics and catchy melodies that will no doubt leave you wanting more.”  The more I think about it, those words hit it dead on, so why try to re-create the wheel.  From the moment I heard them, I was hooked.  The lead singer Alicia has a magnificent voice that can easily soothe the soul, yet get you rockin’ around your house; it’s very catchy and edgy in every aspect.

The band is comprised of three members: Alicia (vocals), Maxwell (bass), and Lucky G (guitars).  They used to live in San Francisco, but left for new opportunities and challenges.  That journey landed them in Los Angeles, with nothing but their dream and their life savings and of course, their instruments.

A Lucky Day later is not a signed artist yet, but it’s a likely possibility in Los Angeles.  Since their arrival in Tinseltown, they have poked the interest of independent labels.  They started to work with Grammy nominated producer Curt Cuomo, and now they have six songs to their first album.  Funds are tight so the album isn’t quite finished yet, but they have found ways to make this dream happen.  Their record, when it comes out, will be a huge hit.  Their passion and dedication to this project, along with overcoming so much, only makes their success even more inevitable.

In honor of Alicia’s mother and all others suffering with this disease, Alicia and the band do a daily benefit show via BlogTv.com.  It benefits two organizations dear to their fans: Write Love On Her Arms and Stand Up For Cancer.  What a great thing to do!  Everyday people come to their web show and listen to the group play covers and acoustic songs. In turn, they support and encourage their fans who are suffering from depression, cancer, and those contemplating suicide.  If that doesn’t show you how much they love their fans, nothing will.

My hats off to this fantastic band because nobody should have to struggle. They turned that into a positive, and they give that positive back.  They do it with a smile and are passionate about their dream.  If we can all manage to try for our dreams the way this band has, America would be destined to go farther than ever.  A Lucky Day Later has realized if you sit around waiting for your dare to be a great opportunity, it will never come. Instead, you must get out, defy the odds and make it happen.  Life doesn’t just give, you got to go ask.  Their passion for their music and their belief to not let anything stop them from achieving their goal is the exact ideal of The Expressionist Magazine. This is why they are a top choice for our feature story, besides their unbelievable songs.

Please check out this band.  You will love their music, and their personalities will win you over if their songs haven’t already.  You can chat with the band, listen to some songs and see their pictures at www.myspace.com/aluckydaylater or go directly to BlogTv for their web cast at www.blogtv.com/people/nightmarebeforejackjack

One Life To Live 1-30-08

January 30, 2009

Its been a while since I made an update to this post, but things have been pretty slow.  Some of the highlights are with Todd and Starr, and Jessica.

Jessica was in St. Ann’s for her split personality disorder.  She has been helping Brody who also landed in the institute when he started to see a child he killed in Iraq.  Their friendship blossomed, and she helped Brody make a breakthrough.  On that very eve of his breakthrough, Jessica went back to the cottage to see if she could figure out what Tess was freaking out about.  There she was told by Bess, that she wanted to kill Natalie and used Tess to do the job she couldn’t.  Jessica then is “integrated” or so we think after that incident.  She told Natalie what she thought to be the truth, which really is a lie, and now Natalie is furious.

I think Bess will return because she will realize that Jessica is in jeopardy with Natalie being so upset.  It won’t help Jessica and this will slow down her progress to recovery.  I expect this will all change soon.

Brody I feel will be out of St. Ann’s shortly as well.  He is putting the past behind now that he found the truth about that incident.

Manning:  This has been a mess, when I last spoke about this Starr testified that she knew her dad (Todd) was intending to kidnap her deceased baby.  The lawyers went on to get their cases built.  In that time, Todd tried to commit suicide, Lee Helpburn returned and Starr’s doctor son is now her Biology teacher.  Throughout this ordeal, Starr has confided in Skyler (teacher) and he has helped her get through this rough patch in her life.  He recently found out from a letter from his mother what Todd intended to do, never knowing he had the answer all along.

The D.A. Nora got a hold of Lee and gave her a plea deal.  Todd told Thea she could not under any circumstances hurt or cross examine Starr.  Having her hands tied behind her back, she manipulates the case.  She tells Starr that her dad tried to kill himself and that this trial depending on the outcome may try again.  Starr now gets on the stand and says she lied before so her dad would not go down and kill himself.  Thea ran a front page story on the Sun, about Lee.  Lee freaks out and runs knowing many past enemies would try to kill her.

Todd knew Starr was covering for him, and told Thea that he didn’t know what she did, but she did something; he could see it in Starr’s eyes.   He vowed that Starr would not pay for his crime as she already is starting to do.  3 hours after the trial, Thea goes to Todd’s house to find a ghastly sight.  Todd killed Lee, cold blood, on his livingroom floor.

That’s where it ended on Friday.  I had a speculation that Todd was wanting out or they were going to write him off for a while.  This may be the way he does it.  I was a bit frustrated that Todd has now gone to trial two times and everything gets thrown out against him.  It’s like enough is enough already, find him guilty of something or stop bringing him to trial.  However, this incident of murder, there is no way to get out of that one.

Fashion Never Dies…It Hibernates!

January 28, 2009

I remember sitting down at my grandparents’ house and looking through the old photo albums.  It’s something I always treasured. Grandparents are known to have extremely old photographs that are fun to look at; they tell stories of the past.  You’ll see your parents when they were kids, if you can imagine that, and you might even see some embarrassing photographs of yourself.  Those photographs are more than just memories of days past with your family, they are time capsules; moments caught in time that tell more than you may realize.

Just recently I was in Connecticut visiting my grandfather and I got to see some old photos of myself.  Not only were they funny to see, but I was amazed at the “fashion faux pas” I had.  At the time it seemed like the “in thing,” but I realize now how ridiculous I looked.  One picture in particular was taken in 1984. I had this bright red shirt with a little alligator on it. Remember those?  Then I saw some pictures with those incredibly short shorts, the kind that looked like an upside down rounded “w” with the white seams going up the sides. I wouldn’t be caught dead in those today.  I even had some with bell bottoms and those old canvas basketball sneakers.  I found one more recently where I wearing  ”Jams” and Reebok pump sneakers.  Oh, and for the hair critiques, the never ending mullet I sported trying to look like Jesse from Full House.

It made me look at fashion today and realize how this stuff never really goes away; it hibernates or it evolves in some way and rest assured, it will return again.  As I walk down the streets, I see those canvas shoes emerging from the grave.  I see bell bottoms and how they evolved.  They used to be these ugly polyester pants with awful colors and now they are hip and trendy jeans that women wear, better known as the “Flare.” The pants are similar to stretchy jeans but hug women’s curves just right for that unbelievable hour glass look.  I even have seen those ridiculous 80s shirts with stupid sayings on them, you know, the ones that are plain white with a colored short sleeve and neck cuff.  These shirts make you look like a string bean, yet they are re-immerging as a teen favorite.

So, where do you get these items?  For the most part, you don’t see them in the stores anymore.  Sure, Wal-Mart may still have some, or stores such as Bealls Outlet and TJ Maxx.  Honestly, you can find them at Goodwill and Salvation Army stores where people have cleaned out their closets from their collected youth and realized, “I’m too old for this stuff.”  They give it to these stores and today’s younger generation realized they found a gold mine for pennies on the dollar.

It isn’t just the 80s and 70s fashion that’s returning.  I have seen a lot more of the Flower Child look from the 60s showing its hippy face, and even some fashion trends of the 50s.  WHY?  It’s just fun to pretend and relive the days of old while putting a modern twist to the fashion.  Clothing that’s authentic to this period of American history can’t usually be found in abundance at these thrift stores.  You can, however, find specialty vintage clothing stores that offer fashion from the 1940s to the 1990s.  Some even go into the “true” vintage era and offer clothing from the 1900s to the 1930s, where pomp and circumstance reigned.

These stores exist in most of your backyards around the United States, but you may have to look.  Tampa for one, has lots of places to get these great fashions.  Yesterdaze is one, located on Hillsborough and Florida Avenue.  La France is a staple in Ybor City and further south, St. Petersburg’s Buffalo Gal is full of nostalgia and charm.  Buffalo Gal, like some other vintage clothing stores, even has a photographer on hand to do vintage pin-ups, which can add to the whole shopping experience.  These places are great because they sell authentic clothing and for a very reasonable price.  These clothes make a great fashion statement, and if it’s something you don’t want to wear everyday, it can be used later for a unique Halloween costume.

If you can’t find a vintage clothing store like this, look at tag sales and even in your grandparents’ or  parents’ attics, as you never know what treasures you will find.

As the first part of this decade comes to a close, vintage clothing is a growing trend among women mostly, but men are starting to join suit.  This is a great way to take the past and integrate it with the future, and even put your own personal spin on it to make it your own expression.  Fashion never “really” dies, it lies dormant or evolves into something new and fresh. It is so much fun to watch what’s going to happen next. It could be a fashion for some, or a blast to the past for the rest of us.  Heaven help us if platform shoes, with the goldfish in them, return!  That’s vintage fashion that I hope lies dormant for a very long time. However, the mullet will never die!

Hotel For Dogs -Review

January 28, 2009

2009_hotel_for_dogs_003Plot:  Two siblings are placed in a foster home with guardians that are white trash, wannabe rock stars whose career is going no where.  They treat the children like animals, and the kids do what ever they can to stay away from home.  Their parents gave them a little puppy before they died, and that puppy has been with them ever since.  However, this foster family does not welcome animals, so the children are forced to hide the dog in the alley, woods and in old, abandoned places.  Finally, they realize they can’t hide him anymore once he gets picked up by the pound.  Upon breaking him out of the pound, they pass by a building getting robbed and the cops try to stop the children.  They run into an abandoned hotel after their dog and end up finding two strays.  They decide to take care of these dogs, and get a whole bunch more, when they realize that these dogs are very much like them and give them a reason for living.

Review:  Personally, I absolutely loved this movie, which Nickelodeon produced. It’s an inspiring movie to watch about children without much hope in life, yet they find a reason to go on.  They show us that someone or some animal needs us and really, we are all alike in so many ways.  It made me realize what you can accomplish if you put your heart and mind to it, irregardless of one’s age.  We can all make a difference.  This movie truly makes you feel all kinds of emotions, from sadness to laughter. Emma Roberts (Andi) did a fabulous job with her role, which tied the whole movie together.  The dogs were cute and hilarious, bringing a smile to your face every time you see them.

I give this movie 5 stars.  The movie is rated G, and is very suitable for all audiences.  The best part is if you see this movie, Pedigree donates money to help abandoned animals in our country.  You can even adopt an animal or donate to the cause right from the movie’s official web site www.hotelfordogs.com .  Don’t miss this one at the theatre, but if you do, it’s a definite buy on DVD.

Day The Music Died – 2/3/59

January 28, 2009

350px-hollymonumentFebruary 3, 1959 will forever be known as, “the day the music died.”  On a blistering cold day, right after a gig in Iowa, three very famous musicians boarded a private jet and attempted to make it to their next gig in Minnesota.  Unfortunately, they never made it because at 1:00 AM in Clear Lake, Iowa the plane crashed killing everyone aboard.

This tour was called “The Winter Dance Party,” which covered 24 stops in three weeks.  It was a great tour, but the travel was tough.  These small planes were the fastest and most logical way to make your gig back then.  The flaw was that it was during the winter, and we all know what harsh weather the Midwest Plains get during this time.  The second flaw was that planes were still new to passenger travel and they didn’t have deicing sensors like we do today.  These two factors played together, causing this horrific crash.  As the musicians flew across the Midwest Plains, the wings of the plane iced up causing too much weight for the prop plane, forcing it to plummet to the ground.

On this plane were musicians: Buddy Holly, better known for songs such as “Rave On,” “Everyday,” “That’ll Be The Day” and “Peggy Sue.” Also on board was Ritchie Valens known for hits such as “Oh Donna,” “La Bamba,” and “Come On, Let’s Go.” The third musician on the plane that fateful trip was the famous J.P “The Big Bopper” Richardson, known for his hits “Chantilly Lace” and “Purple People Eaters.”  Even if you were not born in that era, these songs probably have touched your life in some way.  Also to die on that plane was the pilot.

This crash actually could have been prevented.  Buddy Holly was known to be completely intolerant and had no patience.  He got very upset with his tour bus and convinced his Crickets (Waylon Jennings and Tony Allsup) to charter this flight after the show, which cost $36.00 a person.  Waylon Jennings (“My Maria”) gave up his seat to J.P Richardson who was ailing with the flu, and the other Cricket (Allsup) gave  his seat to an eager Ritchie Valens, who had never flown before.  Not a good first flight for Valens as he boarded a doomed flight to Minnesota.

These men led the way for Rock ‘n’ Roll, basically some of the founding fathers if you will.  In 1959 there wasn’t a sock hop or a malt shop without some of these songs blasting out of the jukebox.  Their deaths forever changed Rock ‘n’ Roll, everyone grieved, and the sound was never quite the same.  We can only imagine what songs these men would have produced along the way, had they not perished that tragic Feb 3rd morning.  It makes you wonder if rock would still sound the same as it does today?

The plane was named “American Pie.” It killed three men as American as apple pie, which is ironic in so many ways. It led to Don McLean’s very popular song, “American Pie,” written and sung by him in 1971 about the crash that devastated the music industry forever.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the crash.  It’s hard to believe that so much time has passed, yet their songs are forever timeless and still play on radio stations today.  Each year people gather on the crash site for a vigil to remember these great legends.

The site will be updated regularly, with new photos being added, as well as information on where and when Zach will be playing live shows in the area.  Zach also just wrapped up the recording of five new songs.  These five tracks, plus four more songs recorded in late 2007, will appear on his new album Body and Soul, slated for release in October of this year.  The album will be on sale at http://www.zachcaruso.com .

The nine songs comprising Body and Soul will also be available for individual download on iTunes and MSN Rhapsody, as well as http://cdbaby.com/cd/zachcaruso

In addition, Zach recently wrapped up filming on the music video for his single Jesus Walks, a controversial song that is a call to action for all listeners, and deals with the record-breaking murder rates in Philadelphia, PA.  The video should be completed and available to view on his website, http://www.zachcaruso.com, as well as youtube.com, by early 2009.
