Fright Flicks
October 22, 2009
‘Tis the season for getting scared. What’s better than curling up with your sweetie on the couch, candles flickering, while watching your favorite horror movie on the television. So, when it comes to great horror movies, what comes to mind?
I asked friends and family in a recent Halloween poll what their favorite scary flicks are. Here are some of their responses:
20. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre-the original: This flick was supposedly based on true events, which makes it just that much scarier. I could easily picture myself stranded on the side of the road in some honky donk country town out there in Texas, having this happen to me. A good reason to always carry a cell phone, keep your gas tanked filled and to not trust anybody!
19. House of Wax: Who doesn’t want to see Paris Hilton get gruesomely murdered? The movie is unsettling, but more than anything, is entertaining to watch. I especially liked the movie theatre scene.
18. The Others: Nicole Kidman was excellent in this haunting film. There is no blood or gore, which can be quite refreshing. I enjoyed the movie’s surprise ending.
17. Silence of the Lambs: Anthony Hopkins was well cast as everyone’s favorite cannibal, Hannibal Lecter. Many of us still quote lines from the movie as of today.
16. The Birds: Great classic Hitchcock thriller, especially for all you bird lovers out there. I know some people who refused to buy a parakeet after seeing this movie. I always hated the one scene with the farmer who was found with his eyes pecked out. To a young child, this made for terrible nightmares and a irrational fear of chickens.
15. The Strangers: This movie greatly disturbed me, and made it difficult to watch the whole way through. The masks used by the three killers would be perfect for trick or treating.
14. Alien: As a child, I was terrified seeing this film. I’m not much for space horror or sci-fi, but this is such a classic and one of the most intense horror movies to date.
13. Paranormal Activity: Yes, this is the just released thriller that is captivating movie audiences everywhere. I have been told that it is extremely suspenseful, and probably would make for a great date movie since most people will find themselves grabbing the person next to them in absolute fear.
12. Psycho: Another Hitchcock favorite. Yes, the blood used in the shower scene was only Hershey’s chocolate syrup, but in reality there was nothing sweet about this horror flick. Most who saw this movie refused to use their showers after this, making bath tubs increasingly popular again. And Anthony Perkins made it downright terrifying to be a “momma’s boy.”
11. The Blair Witch Project: Okay, so this movie got mixed reviews. At first everyone loved it, thinking it to be a real documentary about three lost college kids in the woods. Then, after we all learned those college kids were merely actors and there was a script involved, the movie’s reputation became greatly damaged. I, personally, loved this movie and despite the fact it wasn’t based on true events, I still enjoy watching it each and every Halloween. The eerie moaning sounds emanating from the woods and the child handprints inside the creepy house always freaked me out.
10. Saw (I and II): When I watch this movie, I imagine what I would do if something like this were to happen to me. Could I gauge my eye out in order to find a hidden key that I would need to free myself from ultimate death? Or would I possibly be able to cut off my foot with a dull, rusted saw just so I could to get to another level? Yes, I would probably have to, but thinking about it and seeing different straining scenarios played out in this movie, is definitely not much fun.
9. House: A cult classic, I believe. This flick is not only scary, but humorous too, which is hard to pull off successfully. William Katt is great in this movie; an actor you don’t get to see very often. And then there is George Wendt, our favorite Cheers bar patron, who provides comic assist to this film, not to mention Richard Moll, formerly of Night Court, who makes a mean ghost. One of the greatest parts in House is the troll scene, and the nightmarish monster woman with her slinky dress and red fingernails. A can’t miss during the season.
8. The Uninvited: This is a film that pre-dates many other horror films. The Univited came out in 1944, and is still haunting movie fans to this day. The mysterious tale revolves around a ghostly seaside abode discovered by a brother and sister. Some feel that it’s the vintage horror flicks that are much more terrifying than the modern day slasher, gore films. I couldn’t agree with this more.
7. The Sentinel: This 1970s horror film stars Ava Gardner and Fright Night‘s Chris Sarandon and is set in a Brooklyn Heights apartment. The movie is full of surprises, including a very sexually disturbing scene involving a young Beverly D’Angelo. The ending of this movie is very frightening, and so is an earlier scene involving a half naked old man with a cut off nose. Did I spark your interest yet?
6. Freaks: Another downright scary, and visually disturbing vintage horror flick. It debuted in 1932, and was about sideshow carnival freaks. There was no fancy special effects or make-up artistry used, which brought a truly terrifying factor to the film. It was all very real and all very creepy.
5. The Sixth Sense: Perhaps it’s a tad played out by now, and we all know the surprise ending, but this is a Halloween classic. If you are into the paranormal, you will truly appreciate this movie even after seeing it for the gadzillionth time. I can still remember seeing this the first time at the theatre and the unified gasps of all the movie goers after the amazing ending was revealed. One of the best ghost films ever.
4. It: Simple name, scary movie. This is a movie that defined what it’s like to be clown phobic. If you aren’t scared of clowns prior to this film, you can almost guarantee you will be afterwards. It took me years to walk by storm drains after seeing the film. “They all float down here…” Beware of big rubber shoes and bright red noses.
3. Rear Window: This is by far one of my all time favorites. Rear Window is a psychological thriller without any blood or guts to be seen. Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly are phenomenal here. As a woman, it is worth it to see this movie just for Kelly’s beautiful change of costuming throughout. Talk about elegance! But as a horror lover, this is a must-see. Hitchcock is genius with Rear Window. This flick makes me miss my apartment days for sure. Disturbia, starring Shia LaBeouf, is a modern day version of this classic, but holds no comparison.
2. The Shining: Another favorite horror movie of mine. Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall were perfectly cast in The Shining. The acting was superb and the one liners in this movie are classics to this day. ”Heeere’s Johnny!” When I first saw this movie as a child, there was a lot I didn’t understand. Seeing it as I got older, I definitely understood and that wasn’t always a good thing. Many of the scenes in this film are not only frightening and gruesome, but deeply disturbing. I was particularly scared of The Shining as a child mostly because my dad was a dead ringer for Jack Nicholson. Having a dad that looked like a deranged killer was a bit unnerving.
1. Halloween-the original: When I took this poll, most people responded with this movie as being their all time favorite. It conjures the image of what Halloween should be: fallen leaves strewn across quiet neighborhood streets, carving pumpkins, watching scary movies, trick or treating and what the “boogeyman” is. This movie set the standards for all other classic horror movies. It also put Jamie Lee Curtis on the map. The soundtrack to this film is one of the most listened to of all scary movie soundtracks of all time. Afterall, it just wouldn’t be Halloween without Halloween.
Llanview Awakes 10-16-09
October 17, 2009
Shaun who suffered a coma at the hands of his brother Greg, trying to help his brother by removing the bullet fragments, finally wakes up. Most of the people in Llanview thought Shaun was dead or forever asleep, but somehow this hero makes it and wakes up alive and to the doctors surprise no real damage. However, Rachel was getting a little hot and heavy with Greg as Shaun woke up back in Greg’s apartment. This is going to cause some serious ripples in this family.
Blaire is OK from her fall from the window at La Boulie, but can’t remember anything a few minutes prior to her fall, specifically the info Tea gave Blaire about her having Todd Manning’s baby. Rumor has it that Blaire will remember the news and tell Todd while she is in the hospital.
Bo and Nora pull a fast one on Matthew who was going to Seattle for his surgery. They got him on their private jet and told him they would fly him to Seattle. Instead, once airborne, tell Matthew they are not going to Seattle but London instead. They got him a new school which he will be living in a boarding house; just so they can stop him from making a mistake with this surgery and give him more time to think. Matthew is absolutely livid and no longer trusts his parents.
Natalie is awake now also but in a different light. She found out her husband Jarred had done the stalking on Jessica with this creep he met in prison. Natalie is blown away, but Jarred got a strange text and bolts from the house. Natalie tells John McBain everything, and now they must find Jarred. John and Natalie feel he is being controlled by someone more powerful, and Delphina just told Jessica and Brody that another death was about to happen… I have a feeling its Jarred since his contract was not renewed.
Thrill St. Pete
October 15, 2009
It’s that time of year again. Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” plays regularly on the radio and the living dead walk the streets. And this year, zombies seem to be bigger and more exciting than ever. Society has become somewhat paranoid about the end of the world and some of us have even started to prepare for a potential zombie apocalypse. The hit movie, Zombieland, has wowed audiences across the nation and zombie pub crawls are becoming all the rage. It’s fun, afterall, to sip down a few beers while your flesh is falling off. So, with all this walking dead stuff, it’s no wonder “Thrill the World” is so popular.
“Thrill the World” is a simultaneous dance routine set to Michael Jackson’s beloved zombie song, “Thriller,” that takes place worldwide in an attempt to break a record. Different cities all across the nation, and throughout various countries, will participate in the zombie dance. St. Petersburg, Florida will be hosting its very own “Thrill the World” this year down at The Pier on Oct. 24th, 8:30 pm. The event is already getting tons of attention and seems to be growing everyday in its group participation. Hundreds of dancers and volunteers will be making “Thrill the World” one of St. Petersburg’s most talked about events of the year. After the dance, be sure to stick around for more brain eating, flesh rotting festivities. Captain Al’s Waterfront Grille and Bar, down at The Pier, will be hosting a dance party after the event and there will also be a zombie pub crawl through the downtown district.
If you plan to go, you may want to get there early to grab a parking spot and a good place to watch the zombies strut their stuff.
For more information on “Thrill the World 2009″ visit the website at www.thrillstpete.com.
The event will also include a food drive to benefit the St. Petersburg Free Clinic Food Bank, so be sure to bring a canned or packaged food item.

A Fire Inside “Crash Love” CD Review
October 12, 2009
A Fire Inside or AFI for short, have been around for the past 18 years unleashing upon the music scene seven LPs to date with their eighth “Crash Love,” on the way. But the deal with AFI is a simple known fact, they’ve never seem to stick out with the same sound for more than a couple of albums. Their first being “Answer That and Stay Fashionable,” in 1995. Then the band went on to release “Very Proud of Ya,” the following year, followed up by a third three years later, “Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes.”
Since the earlier creations, AFI has indeed like most bands changed their style to blend in along with the rest of the crowd, just like today’s fads same routine goes for music – AFI went from the stick liking’s of punk down to hardcore punk to horror punk in a matter of just a few years. 1999′s “Black Sails in the Sunset,” and 2000′s “The Art of Drowning,” it wasn’t until 12 years later that the band had stuck major success when it came down to “Sing The Sorrow,” (2003) having the well known hits, “Girl’s Not Grey” and “The Leaving Song, Pt. II,” aside from the others found upon this album. Then the band had taken a brief hiatus and returned in 2006 with “Decemberunderground,” that featured break-through single “Miss Murder,” and second smash-up “Love Like Winter,” now their eighth achievement is on the floor, and “Crash Love,” isn’t all the hype that AFI has been known to establish.
“Crash love,” does play the band’s strongest points to date but goes back to blending into the modern rock n roll vibrations that they changed not so long ago, there are some “old school” influences found upon the album such as “Medicate,” that constantly builds up that classic punk style with galloping guitar riffs with fast racing drum tactics getting your blood pumped. Guitarist Jade Puget steps it up in a major way when “OK, I feel Better Now,” showcasing his standout performance to date, starting off with a trade marking chiming chord sequence, before working into the strummed octaves and some unexpected, game-changing chord effects found within the third verse.
The other songs, make a particular marking that vocalist Davey Havok stays true to his fascination with death and self-destruction, not going away from those themes one bit but encouraging them a lot more. While “Crash Love,” never seems to hit the lyrical highs that “Sing The Sorrow” had once struck – “Veronica Sawyer Smokes,” may just be the most out-standing tune offered, let alone written about Winona Ryder, having Davey’s vocal skills be at their best perfection level to date, allowing him to sing the following line is remarkable: “I saw you every time I closed my eyes, in the Hughes film I had scored, produced and starred in, in my mind.” Nevertheless, Davey’s vocal contribution makes this song work in every way possible – laying out the voices and chorus structure in the perfect combination, having the rest of the music fall simply into place.
“Crash Love,” doesn’t demand for the listener to pay attention to everything spoken yet alone played to the same chord as their previous accomplishments, but it reveals a more intricate and well-constructed album, rarely lacking any proportion of quality or anything else falling out of place.

Children Of Bodom Show Review
October 12, 2009
When you enter the world of metal what is expected to normally happen? Well of course chaos should be one and that is indeed what happens when you enter this “sea of chaos” or perhaps a “sea of black”. On this night three metal bands have come together to create a unique musical atomsphere that all metal heads would be amazed and satsified with from all various angles. Be sure to capture all the chaos that Ohio metallers SKELETONWITCH build up, leding straight into the thundering force field of THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, right into the main attraction of the night, Finlanders, CHILDREN OF BODOM!
Skeletonwitch
Ever attended a mini block party? Well now is your chance at experiencing your first one, how about joining in on all the fun with the spiraling circle of black! Hence I mean the crowd of people dressed all in black proudly expressing their love and devotion to one of the three musical acts that were set to set the stage that forsaken night out at the Glass House in chilly Pomona, California.
First up was an act from Athens, Ohio one who dislikes the fact that not too many people are aware of what type of music they actually perform, so I guess it would just be your plain old heavy metal if I do say so myself but a very upgraded version. Any who, Ohio’s Anthener’s Skeletonwitch brought on the fiery blaze for a non-stop 30 minutes bringing on the skull crushing beer drinking sensation left and right, as the crowd interacted from all various angles – singing such songs off “Beyond the Permafrost,” and new comer, “Breathing the Fire,” due out on October 13th. Some of the head crushing tunes consisted of “Soul Thrashing Black Sorcery,” “Within My Blood,” the title track, along with a douse of double trouble off the newbie album, “Crushed Beyond Dust,” and “Strangled By Unseen Hands”. The front man declaring his statements throughout the set – wrapping it all up when it came to a closing point with “Smoke Weed, Drink Beer, and Eat Some F**king Pussy”.

05. Beyond the Permafrost
06. Submit To The Suffering
07. Soul Thrashing Black Sorcery
08. The Despoiler Of Human Life
09. Within My Blood
The Black Dahlia Murder
Next up was a band everybody was in “die-hopes” of seeing and of course they did, known simply as The Black Dahlia Murder who threw together a 45 minute set capacity that couldn’t hold it altogether when it came to this aggressive crowd of metal heads shouting and being thrown around like a rag dolls singing along to each and every song that came pulsing out of the vocalist along with his band mates to top it all off. Once they set had came to a closing point the final contender of the night that everyone was obviously here for, was up for their hour and a half glory.
Setlist
01. Everything Went Black
02. Black Valor
03. Closed Casket Requiem

Children Of Bodom
Finland’s finest musicians around being led by one of the most talented guitarists around, Alexi Laiho, Children of Bodom was the main attraction of tonight’s metal frenzy, starting the show off with “Living Dead Beat,” rolling right into “Hellhounds On My Trail,” finishing off the introduction with classic but true “Silent Night, Bodom Night.” But that’s not all, the band continued their classic chaos with “Hate Me,” going down the lines of other top notch tunes, “Bodom After Midnight,” “Are You Dead Yet?,” “Blooddrunk,” rounding it all off with “Hate Crew Deathroll,” dedicated to all the hardcore Children Of Bodom fans within the sea of black.
The night closed off to being as I foretold it would, a “sea of black,” and indeed that’s what it was and had becoming, its waves of triumph pushing over anyone/anything that came in its path of destruction.

A Helsinki Vampire: Jyrki 69 Interviewed
October 12, 2009
Do you ever wonder about musicians and what secrets lay behind those closed doors after they’ve departed the stage? Well now the time has arisen and the secrets of the Vampire realm have been foretold and the one and only Helsinki Vampires are back from the dead, but not just back, back in blood. Frontman Jyrki69 spoke to me about The 69 Eyes U.S. return along with the undead truth about the current album and his past creations.
Welcome back to the U.S., how does it feel to be back in California?
Jyrki 69: It’s awesome, Hollywood in general we consider this our second home, this year we spent over 3 months during the spring time recording our newest album so it’s great to finally be able to come back and play a show. It’s never frustrated to hang out in Hollywood and to have fans recognize you and come up and ask you “What are you doing here – why aren’t you playing a show?” at that time there was no way to do anything but now it’s the time and we’re now in Hollywood, so The 69 Eyes and are back in blood!
“Back in Blood,” came out last month and it’s also your tenth to date, how does that make you feel – do you think your music has grown since when you first started?
Jyrki 69: Actually you’re mistaken there is a little confusion everywhere it’s actually our ninth album, I’m excited to do the tenth album when the time arrives, and we have of course several compilations available but this is our nine studio album. Yes and no it’s the same sources of inspiration remains, the same rock n’ roll life remains, on the other hand of course
We’re better song writers, and I myself have written better lyrics, once in a while you make songs that last a little bit longer than others, like most of the songs within our set list, there are the ones we consider “our classics”. There are so many songs that could be on the next ten year compilation, with the way we’ve grown.
Can you briefly tell us about the whole concept for “Dead Girls Are Easy?”
Jyrki 69: It was pure fun with Bam Margera, it was long lost Halloween weekend, the whole idea the name of the song, I just liked the title when I put together everything it represents the dead girls, these gothic girls who want to be dead and want to be a part of the undead and want to become Vampire girls. The story line is this classic old school 80s theme with this nerdy guy working and something strange happens to him when these Vampire girls come into his life. This video is much like the videos from the 80s – having that rockin style and positive atmosphere – all the videos of today have changed, with the bombs, bugs, a very depressing imagines, I’m a fan of the 80s videos so this video is just like those.
What was it like playing on Carson Daily back in 2006 – I’m not sure if you remember me, at that show but I was the girl in the audience who had waved to you, I had wanted to be on the bottom near the stage but couldn’t get down there.
Jyrki 69: That was great that was one of those classic 69 Eyes moments that we were able to do that show, and hopefully we can return to those shows, it’s been an honor to be involved with these shows, (Carson Daily) and to have The End Records (US Label) who have done great promotion for us, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re watching T.V. that you see us performing, we’ll be able to set something up pretty soon and also the next time you wave I will know it is you.
In my opinion I’ve always pictured you guys doing a U.S. tour with H.I.M. would you ever be able to make that happen – I know you guys toured with Cradle of Filth back in 06.
Jyrki 69: That is something the fans are always asking, but I don’t think the bands are really excited about the idea. If you haven’t noticed the Finnish bands don’t really tour together and I don’t know why but that is something that we should considering doing because the fans keep asking about it. I haven’t heard any rumors so don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon. As far as I understand the H.I.M. guys are recording their new album, and there are a lot of Finnish bands around here in Hollywood recording their new albums, so every rocker act is here in Hollywood right now and are from Finland so a very busy period for everybody right now.
What can you tell us about your comic book “Zombie Love: Vampires, Ghosts and the 69 Eyes”?
Jyrki 69: It’s just a compilation of my old stuff that I drew in the 80s as a teenager, during the night, most teens go out and get drunk for the first time and meet the opposite sex, I was this guy that spent my nights at home watching horror movies and listening to strange rock n’ roll music, like the real nerds Somehow these comics survived and the characters pretty much looks like our band and dressed in rocker appeal and the girls are drama queens so it’s not so far away from the world of the 69 Eyes. So I drew them and they still appear interesting so I put it altogether and that’s the book Zombie Love, and after 25 years, the kids still find this comic book amazing and it’s available at all of our shows so pick up a copy.
How about “Route 69,” what can be said about that?
Jyrki 69: That’s a photograph book it’s done by this photographer named Ville Juurikkala, the guy who’s been taking pictures of a majority of Finnish rock bands over the years, H.I.M. Nightwish, and us, and back in 06 he traveled with us and took pictures and put out the book and it has pictures of Japan, Finland but mainly it’s about when we first traveled the states and how everything was different, a very big and exciting experience. It’s a great book filled with great memories.
Your known around the world as the “Helsinki Vampires”, do you consider yourself a Vampire?
Jyrki 69: Well some strange reason I don’t age and I draw people’s attention to me I drive girls crazy especially those that know me. I like to hang out with sunglasses after dark as far as that goes I might be a Vampire but I won’t tell if I’m one or not. But don’t try old school tricks on me like holy water or garlic that won’t kill me. If you really want to destroy me, play me some anti-rock music, Beatles, Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers, if you really want to throw me out of the party and kill me just throw on some bad music that should do it.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Jyrki 69: I hope people will have the chance to check out Back in Blood, because I think it’s our best record The 69 Eyes have done and we’re really proud of it. The theme involves Vampires, and the sound is awesome, and it’s interesting that The 69 Eyes have worked with American artists and producers, and a director for the video, it’s just something we’ve always wanted to do. Now that we’ve had the chance to do it, it’s become a great album but not just from The 69 Eyes but in general in the year 2009.

Another Dorian Scam – 10-9-09
October 9, 2009
Desperate to defeat Vicki for the Mayoral seat, Dorian Lord has stooped to a new low. Dorian recently found that Vicki had the support of the gay & lesbian population. In order for her to take back those votes she wanted to show her support by having David Vickers/Buchanan play gay. David refused, but right at that moment a knock came on her front door, it was a lesbian with outstanding credentials to be her new campaign manager. Kim easily de-throwned David and quickly put a plan in motion to get Dorian the votes while also forcing her own agenda. She set a press conference where she forced Dorian to marry gay and lesbian couples once she’s Mayor despite the current law of Pennsylvania.
At the conference she was being grilled by the press and the Gay and Lesbian Foundation members; so Dorian announced she was a lesbian and Kim was her fiance, and upon the election she will marry lesbians and gays. This has really angered Kyle whose boyfriend was in on it; knowing that Dorian is not gay. This scam freaked out Langston, and will probably haunt her in the end.
Todd showed up looking for his estranged wife Tea, being married for just 1 day; they had a fight that she was married to Ross still and Todd threw her out. He was going to find her, maybe to talk it through. Todd showed up at Dorian’s at the press conference knowing Tea would be hunting down Blair.
Inside Blair found out that Tea had a child with Todd and never told him. That was this huge secret that Tea didn’t want let out and Blair threatened to march right up to Todd and tell him. The two struggled and threw each other; Tea hit a wall but in an ironic twist of fate, Blair went out a window like she did to Tea years earlier.
Jarred is also under scrutiny, because the stalker happened to end up dead. John and Brody had their suspicions of Jarred all along but once the body was found they called the last number on his cell and it rang to Jarred’s cell. They found text messages between the two, e mails and money being wired into the stalker’s account. Now the question is, was Jarred being blackmailed or was he still out for Jessica’s demise?
