I recently got word of this great beachside establishment a couple of months ago. Travel and Leisure refers to this funky new Florida hotel as “hip, affordable and resolutely casual.” But that’s hardly the only good press this place has gotten. The Postcard Inn, located on beautiful St. Pete Beach, has received much praise on its inexpensive room rates and cool vintage vibe. The hotel captures the essence of old Florida in a very charming way. No two rooms are alike. Certain rooms feature beachy wall murals, while others come with their very own grassy patios equipped with hammocks to lounge on. Despite each room being unique, they all have a commonality- being retro chic. The Postcard Inn may be vintage, but has a modern twist; it is unlike any other hotel I have ever seen.

I’m a sucker for nostalgia, so I couldn’t wait to check this place out. It was a warm June evening when I decided to venture over to the hotel and have dinner at its critically acclaimed barbeque restaurant. Wildwood Barbeque has gotten much recognition since its opening here in town. The restaurant serves scrumptious, mouth-watering barbeque from pit master, “Big Lou” Elrose and offers a wide array of bourbons, which I was later told by my waiter, pairs well with this kind of cuisine. Wildwood’s interior is rustic urban, with plenty of polished wood and flatscreen televisions. In the background, feel good music played out on the overhead speakers. The menu features a great selection of barbeque and all the fixin’s. There is the Carolina pulled pork in vinegar sauce, the Kansas City baby back ribs slathered in a spicy chipotle, and the Memphis style ribs dry rubbed, just to name a few. The sauces to accompany these rib dishes taste amazing, and the tender meat practically falls right off the bone. While I dined, I particulary enjoyed the sticky ribs, which are full cut spare ribs served wet in a delicious sweet and tangy sauce. I also sampled the Texas smoked brisket, garnished with pickled jalapenos. Typically, I’m not much of a jalapeno fan (too hot for my taste buds!), but on this dish, they were just right and the pickling cut down the heat. It was a perfect accessory to the brisket. The meat here was so unbelievably tender, it felt like it melted as soon as it touched my tongue. I was in my happy place.

If you can’t handle a full rack of ribs, there are half racks available as well, for the smaller appetite. With my ribs that evening, I started with just a half rack, but they were so tasty, I regretted not ordering the bigger version. And if pork isn’t your thing, don’t fret, as the applewood smoked chicken with an apricot barbeque glaze is just heavenly to the palate. There are also combo plates and sampler platters for those who want to try a little of this, and a little of that. The sides are just as special as the actual barbeque entrees. The aged cheddar mac and cheese is out of this world, and the baked beans served with burnt ends and bacon, taste just as good as my grandmother’s. There is also cast iron skillet cornbread, which is a must-try.

In addition to the amazing food, the service was first rate. My table was checked on multiple times during dinner, and my waiter was exceptional. He was a young man, but showed much knowledge regarding the food and the restaurant itself. My ice tea, served icey cold in a Mason jar, was kept filled throughout the evening.

I was done with my meal and ready to explore the rest of the hotel. Even though I had washed my hands in the bathroom (which I was impressed with, even though it was quite small), I could still smell the lingering scent of ribs on my fingers. I guess this really wasn’t a complaint though. I started toward the lobby, which looked very unexpected, but in a good way. Retro, hip and fresh is a perfect way to describe the unique decor; 1960s’ surfer chic mixed in with a little James Bond (the Sean Connery version), and topped off with cozy coffeehouse funk. The Postcard Inn on the Beach showed itself to be clean, uncluttered and full of nostalgic charm. I felt like I was in St. Pete Beach back when my folks were teenagers and dating. Ah, those simpler, happier days again. Just walking through the lobby to the back doors leading out to the pool, I felt refreshed, light and airy. The hotel had already proven to be a major mood lifter. Strolling through the courtyard was like another jolt back into time. There was a nice selection of comfy vintage lawn furniture arranged on the freshly cut, bright green grass. An outdoor pool table and a couple of ping pong tables were a nice twist to the more traditional hotel courtyard set-ups. Under a few sprawling branches of a couple of shady old oaks, dangled glass lanterns that flickered over a few Adirondack chairs grouped next to a fire pit. The scene looked like something out of the Poconos in the summertime, back in the ’50s. It was magical.

The pool beckoned on this hot summer’s night with its sparkling blue water, cool and refreshing. Retro lawn chaise loungers lined its perimeter. And if old style simplicity isn’t your thing, then bronze your hide on the South Beach influenced outdoor beds. I think I would have to order a martini if I laid out on one of these. Glamorous, chic and once again, oh so reminiscent of 1960s James Bond.

Just past the pool sits a legendary beach bar; a real one-of-a-kind, as far as this writer is concerned. What was once the Swigwam, the oldest beach bar around, is now the PCI Beach Bar and Snack Shack. Covered in old license plates from all over the nation, the rustic wooden shack attracts a mostly young and hip crowd. However, there still are the more seasoned patrons who hang around PCI that were regulars from when it was the Swigwam. These are the sunbaked beach bums and bumettes who never gave up their bar stools. Despite the age differences, these patrons blend right in with the college crowd and young professionals. Twenty-something women, with sand sprinkled on their brightly painted toenails, ease up to the bar for frozen concoctions and cold brewskies. Guys wearing polo shirts with their farmer’s tans sit back on the wooden benches listening to the live music and occasionally glancing over at a pretty beach babe. The bar translates well from afternoon to evening. Once the sun melts into the ocean and the moon and stars begin to peek out from behind the purple lined clouds, the PCI Beach Bar starts to really come to life. A warm breeze gently sways the seagrape leaves next to the far end of the bar, and a girl wearing a pair of worn and faded cut-offs and flip-flops encrusted in wet sand orders a tropical drink. A group of college coeds plays a game of night volleyball on the sand under the moonlight, while the seat oats blow back and forth softly. And old dude with a Gorton’s fisherman beard pulls up a seat, while Cat Steven’s classic hit, “Moonshadow,” plays in the background. “Draven was here. Don’t steal my name,” is scribbled onto the weathered wood bar top. Of course, there are the many inscriptions of “forever loves” grafittied around the beach shack as well. ”John and Sue forever.” ”Tina loves Mike forever.” I just wonder how many of those “forevers” were sincere. Then, I notice something scribbled in permanent black marker on the farthest side of the bar. A female patron had written out a list of people who had attended her recent divorce party. The shack’s dim lighting barely illuminates, casting a cozy and warm glow. I felt like any minute I would see an old time sea captain walk in off the sand, and order up a boilermaker. A bikini clad bartender, with an elaborate tattoo covering most of her beautifully tanned back, was busy behind the bar taking drink orders. I tried the ever classic pina colada, which was nicely mixed and perfectly sweet. The bar also serves up a large selection of beer in cans.

All in all, my experience that night at this retro beachside hot spot was memorable. It was exciting to be in an environment so different and unique. As I walked back out through the Postcard Inn’s lobby, I took one last lingering look around. A movie was playing on a wall, overhead on a projector. The night clerk smiled friendly and wished me a good night. I opened the door leading to the front parking lot, and stepped out once more into the warm summer’s night… back into 2010, all over again.

Damme, a.k.a. The Crafty Hag, will be showing off all of her freshest creations. This artist/printmaker says it will be her first year at the show, and is very excited to participate. Damme’s art pieces are unique, original and fantastically funky. I especially have a fondness for her wicked little Halloween designs, many of which I have on display in my home year round. Damme is an animal lover, which is definitely reflected in her creations. Her work includes everything from dogs to jellyfish. Ever wondered what a cat would look like dressed in mummy wrappings? Well, Damme can show you! This talented artist offers a little something for everyone.

So, if you are looking for a fun and cool way of spending a weekend in July, be sure to stop by the Cool Art Show. The A/C will be blowing, and parking and admission are both free. So, come out to browse, buy and make some new friends. It’s a “can’t miss” event!

For more info on the show, go to http://coolartshow.com/

The Coliseum is located at 535 4th Ave. North in St. Petersburg

The Civil War may long be over, but for certain history buffs, it never ended. The infamous battle between the North and the South continuously gets played out over and over each year throughout various states. Florida is no exception to Civil War reenactments. Men and women throughout the “Sunshine State” take the historical reenactments very seriously, many making them part of their lifestyles instead of just being a hobby. Some reenactors spend hundreds, even thousands each year on Civil War attire, accessories, weapons and camping gear. They learn just what it was like to live in the days when the Yankees and Confederates were at war. Reenactors dedicate their time to learning how the soldiers and their families spoke, what they spoke about, and also study authentic Civil War recipes and music. And each year these reenactors visit various sites, performing mock battles to entertain and educate the public. Typically at each event site, crowds can witness the infamous battle scene and walk around the campsite, learning about how the soldiers lived back in the day. Sometimes there will be handmade goods for sale, such as soaps and clothing.

I recently caught up with Brooksville resident Bill Penkava, a Civil War reenactor and historian. “I started four or five years ago doing living histories of Florida pioneers of the 1840s-1890s at the annual Pioneer Days celebration at Ft. Cooper, and the Chinsegut Hill Manor House. Then, two years ago, I started Civil War reenacting at the Brooksville Raid (one of the largest reenactments in Florida),” says Penkava.

Penkava states that he became interested in reenacting simply because he is a “history nut.” For years he has been studying various historical events throughout time, as well as geneology. In addition to Civil War reenacting, Penkava belongs to the Seminole Wars Historic Foundation, the Hernando Preservation Soceity, and the Friends of Chinsegut Hill. As a reenactor, Penkava says he started in the infantry, and has participated as both a Confederate and Union soldier at various Tampa Bay historical events. “We try to realistically portray life in the Civil War camps, and follow the military drill and formations of that time. I am in a unit that represents an actual unit raised in Hernando County in July 1861, Company C, 3rd Florida. I now act with another man as a Provost Marshall and perform military police duties in the authentic Civil War camp,” explains the reenactor. Penkava further goes on to say that his Civil War group, Company C, 3rd Florida, was once known as the Hernando Wildcats. In addition to the infantry and provost jobs, Penkava says there are women in his group who dress in period clothing, while others serve as the medical corp. Other Civil War units provide artillery and cavalry. Company C, 3rd Florida is hardly the only Civil War reenactment group in the state. If you are looking to join a Confederacy unit, there are many choices such as the 3rd Battalion, 5th Florida, Company B, 2nd Florida Infantry, 2nd Florida Artillery, as well as a listing of others. Union groups include the 4th Brigade District of Florida, 8th U.S. Colored Troops, and the USS Ottawa, just to name a few.

Penkava says he does about six “battles” a year, but also takes part in other local events such as the Brooksville Christmas parade, history demonstrations at the Heritage Museum and at Chinsegut Hill. Penkava also mentions that in November he will be participating in the first annual Veteran’s Day celebration in Brooksville. “There will be about 1,000 reenactors from the Seminole Wars through today’s conflicts that will participate.” Penkava attends reenactments all throughout the Tampa Bay area, however, he claims that some members will go to events all over the state and even elsewhere in the country, like Gettysburg. Penkava has done the Brooksville Raid and the Crystal River Raid twice each, and has also done several smaller local skirmishes such as the Pioneer Village in Dade City. The reenactor says he will be doing the Parrish Train Raid this year as well.

So, why do people choose to reenact? According to Penkava, reenacting is the accurate representation of the way soldiers lived and fought during the Civil War. People do it now to honor the sacrifices of those who served, and they enjoy sharing the history they are preserving. And if you choose to reenact and become a history preservationist, what qualifications must you possess in order to join a unit? Penkava tells me that nothing more than interest in the history of the period is needed, plain and simple. Historically influenced clothing, accessories and weapons aren’t required before joining, but borrowing from other members and purchasing new items are necessary once becoming involved. Penkava says he owns a Confederate uniform along with several different hats, leather belts, brass buckles, shoes, ammo pouches, a bayonet, musket, revolver, canteen and more.

Having many accessories and gear is definitely important as a reenactor, however, it can also be a hardship. Penkava feels that there are physical challenges of carrying around all the heavy and cumbersome Civil War gear, as well as having to wear the hot wool uniform in the Florida heat, along with uncomfortable period shoes. I’m sure some of the female group members have similar complaints of their own, regarding their heavy dress fabric and awkward, large hoopskirts. As a native Floridian, I have endured many sweltering, hot summers and I honestly don’t know what I would do without my cotton tank tops, loose fitting shorts and cloth flip-flops.

But despite the difficulties that come with reenacting, especially in a state such as Florida, the joys of belonging to a Civil War group are far greater. Penkava says that being able to help teach history to those who attend these events is the best part of being a reenactor. Many people, especially the younger generation, do not know our nation’s rich history, including that of the Civil War. These kinds of reenactments help us to learn and understand history unlike any book or classroom teacher can.

So, will the South rise again? It just depends on the day; perhaps on Saturday, but most likely the Confederacy’s win will be short-lived. For on Sunday, while munching on a bag of sweet and salty kettle corn, the Yanks fight back… at least until the next event.

Hyperplastic Corpus Corrosum is an underdeveloped brain, specifically the part that connects the two hemispheres together, resulting in a failure to thrive. Despite the circumstances, Ethan has overcome many obstacles and manages to fight for life. He is a brave soul that just wants a chance to live a normal life, no matter the dismal prognosis of permanent brain damage. Each day Ethan wakes up, and fights to keep his food down, as his parents feed him through a feeding tube. He goes into an oxygen chamber for an hour each day, and once a week private nurses come in and give him blood transfusions. Ethan also has a special teacher that visits his home once a week and works with him. Ethan cannot speak or see well, has developed an immune deficiency, suffers from breathing problems, cannot hold his head up for long or even grab objects. It is heartwrenching to even mention the list of problems. However, despite these challenges, on July 20, 2008 Ethan managed to smile for the very first time, showing the world he is happy and loves life.

For his parents, caring for Ethan is a 24 hour a day job, one they do without complaining or hesitation. They love their son and will do anything for him, and that’s why they need to give Ethan a possible life saving procedure called Cord Blood Transfusion. They saved his cord blood when he was born, and that very blood could reverse many or all of his problems. As a child, the blood is most useful at the age he is at, however, each day they wait the chances of recovery dwindle. Many doctors in the U.S. won’t even do this 15 to 20 minute procedure that could save Ethan’s life, as they say the risks are too high.

Ethan’s mother says that he gets a blood transfusion every week, exposing him to possible disease and rejection. This procedure is no different except it’s his own blood that has the possibility to heal him. To get this procedure they have to leave the country and go to China for a 15 minute infusion. The procedure, with travel, costs $30,000.00. This kind of money they must raise in order to help their son. What really angers them is that this could be done right here in the United States. The goal is to find a U.S. doctor that will take the risk, stand up for Ethan and give him the procedure here (probably costing half of, or even a quarter of the price). However, until that person steps up, China is their only bet.

The worst thing that could happen with this procedure is nothing; Ethan doesn’t get better at all. On the other hand, the best case scenario would be that the nutrient rich blood could reverse all his problems making Ethan a healthy, young boy. However, if Ethan only gains slight improvement, that will help his quality of life even in the smallest way, making the procedure well worth it. That’s why on Saturday, December 19th, 2009 from 6:30 p.m. to midnight, local bands are going to come together to rock for a cure, raising money to help Ethan get that possible life saving procedure.

hly baked cookies, spending time with family and waiting for Santa’s arrival. For me, the ever classic tale of The Nutcracker always comes to mind. I remember one of the first times I saw the ballet. I was a little girl, and my mother took me to see it. I loved the costumes, the dancing and of course, the beautiful music. For many Christmas seasons to follow, my mother would continue to take me to see the performance. As an adult, I continue to look forward to the beloved ballet. The story is timeless and continues to be a part of my holiday tradition today.

Originally written in 1816 by E.T.A. Hoffman, the popular dance production was called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, and was considered to be quite mor

bid, not exactly something recommended for children. It was later on revised to a more child friendly version with the help of the French writer, Alexander Dumas Pere. Pere sparked the interest of Marius Petipa, the senior ballet master of the Russian Imperial Ballet. In 1891, he commissioned Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to compose the score for a full length version of The Nutcracker. It debuted the following year in St. Petersburg, Russia. The ballet stayed until 1934, when it appeared in London. Six years later, it was introduced to the United States in a shorter version. Then in 1954, choreographer George Balanchine created his famous and well known version of The Nutcracker for the New York City Ballet. Although the ballet is not as dramatic or scary as it first was written to be, it still embraces the original story. A little girl’s favorite Christmas toy (the Nutcracker) comes to life and takes her away to a magic, fairy tale land populated by dolls after defeating the evil Mouse King. This is a tale where reality is lost and imagination prevails. Sugarplum fairies sparkle, and toy soldiers don red candied cheeks. It’s make believe, happy and wonderfully written for all ages to enjoy. However, it is a well known fact that nearly every version of ballet production consists of mostly all Caucasian performers. LaVerne Reed wanted to change that.

Reed, who grew up in South Philly in the 1950s, studied dance and took on small roles in The Nutcracker in the Pennsylvania Ballet throughout the years. Reed was always a very talented dancer, but was never cast as Claire (or Clara), the lead character in the production. Reed said that when she got older she was going to create and direct her very own version of the classic tale where the dancers could all be of different colors; a multicultural Nutcracker production. This was Reed’s vision, her dream. She went on to study dance and theatre at Howard and George Washington Universities, and then later on lead a national dance touring company. At the age of 39, Reed set out to remake The Nutcracker… her way. This African-American inspired modern take on the original holiday classic would be called The Chocolate Nutcracker.

Reed’s narrative loosely follows the original version, but unlike the original more Victorian version, the opening party scene is set in 1950s Harlem. And this is just the first change to the version we all know. The lead dancer, Claire, has to fight off vicious snakes instead of battling the notorious Mouse King and his army. Traditional snowflakes are replaced with twinkling starlight generated by a hidden disco ball. And if you remember the original Nutcracker, there are magical lands including that of the Snow Queen and Candy Land. In Reed’s version, little girl Claire stops off in more realistic places such as Africa, Egypt and Brazil. She even visits a street corner where a jazz bassist and saxophonist play a duet. However, there still is magic involved in each of these places. Claire explores the “Magical Rainforest,” a place called the “Land of Funk” and “Jazz Land.” The little girl and the Chocolate Nutcracker explore these faraway lands in a dream. With all their global travels, the duo is introduced to a variety of musical dance genres such as gospel, hip-hop, jazz, modern, tap and ballet. According to Reed, the whole idea was to incorporate cultural touchstones that would better resonate with minority audiences and incorporate more popular dance styles than just the traditional pointy-toe ballet.

The Chocolate Nutcracker came to life in 1994 on the campus stage at the University of Southern California, and it has been exciting audiences ever since. Performed throughout the country, the ballet production is selling out to large crowds. It’s not just the popularity of the show that has grown, but also the amount of dancers involved. When The Chocolate Nutcracker first got started there were only about 75 dancers, mostly all youngsters. Today, there are over 200 dancers from the ages of six to twenty-five, along with over 120 adult volunteers. Quite a few of the children involved with the ballet over the years have endured personal struggles. Some haven’t had much to go home to. They may live in high poverty situations or come from broken homes. Instead of getting involved with crime such as using drugs or hanging out on the streets, these children have overcome the odds and taken to dance. In fact, dancing is their life. When these youngsters perform, they use every ounce of their heart and soul. Their passion and drive is amazing and it truly emanates in each one of their performances. In addition, the production is not exclusionary, meaning white children can participate and many ending up doing just that.

The end result of Reed’s dream is nothing short of energetic, fun and different. It’s a refreshing twist to the original version we all know so well. Sometimes it is hard to embrace change, but in this case, change is a good thing. The Chocolate Nutcracker has everything and more that the classic tale does. So, if you haven’t seen it, be sure to do so this holiday season.

It’s that time of year again. Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” plays regularly on the radio and the living dead walk the streets. And this year, zombies seem to be bigger and more exciting than ever. Society has become somewhat paranoid about the end of the world and some of us have even started to prepare for a potential zombie apocalypse. The hit movie, Zombieland, has wowed audiences across the nation and zombie pub crawls are becoming all the rage. It’s fun, afterall, to sip down a few beers while your flesh is falling off. So, with all this walking dead stuff, it’s no wonder “Thrill the World” is so popular.

“Thrill the World” is a simultaneous dance routine set to Michael Jackson’s beloved zombie song, “Thriller,” that takes place worldwide in an attempt to break a record. Different cities all across the nation, and throughout various countries, will participate in the zombie dance. St. Petersburg, Florida will be hosting its very own “Thrill the World” this year down at The Pier on Oct. 24th, 8:30 pm. The event is already getting tons of attention and seems to be growing everyday in its group participation. Hundreds of dancers and volunteers will be making “Thrill the World” one of St. Petersburg’s most talked about events of the year. After the dance, be sure to stick around for more brain eating, flesh rotting festivities. Captain Al’s Waterfront Grille and Bar, down at The Pier, will be hosting a dance party after the event and there will also be a zombie pub crawl through the downtown district.

If you plan to go, you may want to get there early to grab a parking spot and a good place to watch the zombies strut their stuff.

For more information on “Thrill the World 2009″ visit the website at www.thrillstpete.com.

The event will also include a food drive to benefit the St. Petersburg Free Clinic Food Bank, so be sure to bring a canned or packaged food item.

Synopsis

Race. Religion. Sexuality. The topics you’re never supposed to discuss in polite conversation have become the focus of this series of monologues written by Adrienne Nadeau.

The Studio@620 has culled Tampa Bay’s young talent to find provocative and compelling performers. Boasting new, fresh actors and experienced veterans of stage and screen, our cast is as diverse as the monologues.

Capturing the stories of a Black man who complains that the stereotypes of African Americans don’t reflect who he is, a Muslim girl standing her ground against a lecture on the futility of her religion, an Athiest sanding out flyers on the street corner, a man questioning his sexuality, a woman explaining the truth of bisexuality, the voices merge to combat the stereotypes of America today.

Adrienne Nadeau wrote her monologue series as a student in the University of Tampa’s class on alternative writing. Performed as a stage reading for the University of Tampa’s Honors College, the collection won praise from professors and students alike.

The Studio@620 eagerly picked up the collection and Jeffrey Skatza, the curator for The Pen Is Mightier, is codirecting with Adrienne Nadeau. This unique performance is sure to be remembered as a groundbreaking event for Tampa Bay theatre. The pieces will make you think, challenge your beliefs, and make you question your own views. While the stories might seem unbelievable at times, every piece is based on a story from a Florida resident. Adrienne admits she didn’t have to look far to find inspiration.

The voices of the characters are sincere and evocative, and the talented cast adds passion and conviction to their pieces. Proceeds of Stereotypes In America will go to The Warrior Woman Inc., a local non-profit organization dedicated to bringing empowering writing workshop to teens and at-risk youth. Over $500 in merchandise and gift certificates from Blue Martini, Build-A-Bear, the Tampa Improv, and more will be raffled off for additional donations to the organization.

In a land far, far away armored knights clash lances, wizards cast spells and gypsies dance to magical beats. Villagers in dust covered garments peddle, while jewel adorned royalty walk with heads held high. Suddenly, a familiar sound is heard. ”Hark, thy cell phone ringth!”

Yes, it’s that time of year again when modern day Tampa meets the rustic, medieval town of Fittleworth. Located in North Tampa just outside of MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry), the Bay Area Renaissance Festival celebrates its 30th year and seems to be stronger than ever, despite the fragile economy. Once you walk through the gates, you are immediately transported back to the days of King Henry VIII and his beautiful queen, Catherine Parr. The festival is a magical realm of maypoles and minstrels; merlins and merchants. Ethereal skinned fairies prance and skip amongst festival guests, and impromptu sing-a-longs take place around nearly every corner. This medieval land is a place where you can go and escape the everyday stresses of our current world. At the Bay Area Renaissance Festival, also known as BARF (its unappealing acronym), happiness is abundant. There is also no shortage of unusual characters that are regularly seen wandering the festival grounds. Look for trolls, storytellers, jousting knights, a royal court and villagers. One of the most famous villagers may be Christophe the Insultor, better known as Christopher Buelhman, a talented actor and writer based in St. Petersburg, FL. Buelhman wanders the festival, insulting people for money. Let’s just say, the more money you give to Buelhman, the worse the insult. As a festival patron of many years, I have become a huge fan of Christophe the Insultor. Trust me, the guy can be cruel but he is highly creative and is surely a festival staple. To take Buelhman’s heat, you either need to be equipped with a good sense of humor or a strong brew.

“Lords” will delight in watching beautiful gypsies gyrate their bodies to enchanting melodies, while “ladies” will find it hard not to stare at those sexy medieval dudes in skin stretching tights. One of the most famous pair of legs at the Bay Area Renaissance Festival belongs to Randy Constan, better known as Peter Pan. Constan is a regular to the Tampa festival and spends his time while there “pixie dancing to the sounds of harps and flutes.” Constan, who portrays the fantasy character of Peter Pan, dresses in the signature green tunic, tights, feather cap and elf like shoes. There never seems to be a lack of elaborate and theatrical styled costumes at the festival. Some patrons, in addition to the festival characters, come adorned in medieval garb allowing them to blend in with the atmosphere.

In addition to the many eccentric characters, there is a plethora of vendors which make up the medieval marketplace. Tents line the festival grounds, each filled with different goods. Some vendors sell goddess scented perfumes, potions and incense. Choose a handmade oil to lure a lover, or bring home a fragrant candle that you may have helped to create. Wanna really get into a fairy tale like mood? Why not get your hair braided like a princess or beautify your arms with henna ink. Get fitted for elf ears, have your fortune told by a crystal ball or try squeezing yourself into a laced corset after lunch.

If shopping isn’t your cup of tea, there are many other great ways to spend your day at the festival. Entertaining actors preform throughout the day on various wooden stages. Some of my “can’t miss” favorite shows include live armored contact jousting, the washing well wenches, and the ever famous mud show (don’t wear white… you’ve been warned). There is also a new act this year featuring Lady Mesmer, a professional comedic hypnotist, who encourages crowd participation. Uh-oh.

Children are definitely welcomed; in fact, every year there is something called “Festival Friday,” which is an educational day for participating Bay Area schools. There are medieval themed rides and games, not to mention the Children’s Realm. This is where little girls can become princesses for the day and boys can channel their inner pirates.

If a cup of English tea is what you need, you may sit down with Queen Catherine Parr and exchange royal gossip. And be sure not to miss out on the character parade. Each and every day, the villagers and royal court will walk through the festival, waving and smiling at guests.

The Bay Area Renaissance Festival is certainly a place you will never leave hungry. Turkey legs are the most sought after item on the festival’s menu. In fact, over 30,000 pounds of turkey legs were ordered this year! Scotch eggs (a hard boiled egg wrapped in sausage and coated in bread crumbs, then deep fried) are also a favorite and tend to sell out quickly. On a cooler day at the festival, one might delight in soup served in a bread bowl. For a hearty English lunch, shepherd’s pie comes to mind or perhaps a plate of fish and chips. And for a lighter meal, try the sauteed garlic mushrooms. A runner-up to this dish would be a bowl of tempura battered vegetables. For a snack, pick up some sugar coated nuts. The smell of these alone is olfactory heaven.

There are also plenty of traditional style foods available at the festival such as quesadillas, roasted corn and burgers (try the portobello mushroom kind). The kids will love eating dino nuggets. Dinosaur sure tastes like chicken… oh wait, it is chicken. And what’s a festival without the booze? Black and Tan, a beer that is made from a blend of pale ale and a dark beer such as a porter or stout, is very popular. The Snakebite (a drink made from hard cider and lager beer) is also often requested and although its venom isn’t poisonous, it is certainly strongly felt. The honey mead’s sweet nectar is intoxicating to sip, making it a must to try. You can even purchase a leather or pewter drinking mug at the festival and use that instead of a “not so authentic” plastic cup. The Feast of Fantasy is a food event that some festival patrons choose to do instead of the traditional booths. With a special ticket, you are not only admitted to the festival, but you also get a sit down, six course feast fit for a king. Two hours of entertainment and a unique gift are also included.

With all the fine food and drink at the festival, there is no surprise the amount of merriment and love which abounds. Certain festival guests may even be lucky enough to witness a fairy tale wedding taking place on the grounds. There are some newlyweds that couldn’t think of a more romantic place to exchange their vows. Happily ever after? Well, to each his own, I say.

The Bay Area Renaissance Festival is not only love struck, but it is also star struck. This year the festival is holding auditions for the movie, “All’s Faire in Love,” starring Christina Ricci and Cedric the Entertainer. If you have ever dreamed of being an extra in a movie, you may now get your chance by just attending the festival.

Each weekend the festival hosts a different theme, so don’t expect to take home the same experience twice. On February 21st to the 22nd, which was the first weekend of the festival,”Highland Fling” was the theme. Just picture a lot of men walking around in kilts. From February 28th to March 1st was the “Wine, Chocolate and Song” weekend; the perfect place for a romantic date. On March 7th to the 8th, “A Silk Road: Discover the Riches,” there will be a pet fest, belly dancing and a juggling competition. A weekend of “Shamrocks and Shenanigans” will take place on March 14-15th, in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Just watch out for those naughty little Leprechauns! On the weekend of March 21st to the 22nd, the theme is “Italian Masters,” which includes many interesting inventor exhibits. ”The High Seas Adventure” is set to sail on March 28th to the 29th. It is biker weekend, so bikers (and pirates, of course) are welcome. ”The Spanish Expedition,” April 4th to the 5th, concludes the Bay Area Renaissance Festival. There will be mass vow renewals, Spanish food, a flower festival and a longbow competition.

So, for all ye peasants and fools out there, it’s time come out to Tampa’s best known festival. It’s a place where there are plenty of overflowing bosoms, long haired men and sparkly fairy wings. Just beyond the gates, modern day language changes to Old English and technology no longer exists. Just be sure to bring good walking shoes and your sense of humor. After all, where else can you pay money to have your best friend insulted and ogle a man in purple tights, while your face is covered in turkey grease?

*The Bay Area Renaissance Festival has had its gates opened since February 21st and will continue to do so until April 5th.

Hours are from 10 am to 6 pm, weekends only. Rain or shine!

Tickets at the gate: Adult-$16.95, Child (5-12)-$8.95, Senior (62+)-$13.95/Discounted tickets are available at Walgreens, Circle K or through Sweetbay Supermarkets.

There is plenty of free parking.

Don’t forget to bring along your medieval beasts. Leashed dogs and cats are always welcomed at the festival.

Costumes are allowed.

The festival is located in North Tampa at 11315 46th Avenue (Fowler and 46th Street), adjacent to MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry) and across from the USF Sundome

Calling all artists! Artists who work in all types of media are invited to try their hands at Sidewalk Art during the first annual Bloom N Garden N Chalk Fest in Safety Harbor. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, and from 10 to 4 on Sunday, March 29 with a variety of valuable prizes to be awarded during a ceremony at the Safety Harbor Gazebo at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Artists may register on line at www.bloomnchalkfest.com. The deadline to reserve a space in the event is Friday, March 6. Local families are also welcome to pre-register and join the fun during the festival. There are no fees for participation, and chalk will be provided to all of the registered artists without charge. There will also be a Kids Chalk Garden to allow kids to be creative.

Lee Jones, president of the Florida Chalk Artists Association, will be joined by some other Florida Chalk Artists in creating amazing chalk art during the festival. Jones, who has participated in Chalk Art Festivals across the nation, will also be in Safety Harbor on Saturday, March 14, from 10 to 1 at the Rigsby Center in Safety Harbor to present a free clinic for interested participants who want to know more about techniques involved in sidewalk art as they plan their projects for the upcoming event.

A reception for artists and sponsors will be held at Syd Entel Galleries on Friday, March 27 from 6-9 pm to kick off the opening of the event. As a special incentive to participating artists, Syd Entel Galleries has agreed to provide exhibit space for a limited number of works to be sold and promoted by each participating professional artist during the Festival.

Participants also will be treated to a continental breakfast each morning of the festival as well as free refreshments during the day. In addition to a number of prizes, three art school scholarships will be awarded during the event. The scholarships are to Full Sail University, Ringling School of Art and Design and the University of South Florida School of Art and History.

Local artists Zoran Peshich and Stacy Roth of Harbour Arts were first among Safety Harbor artists to sign up to participate. This event features a number of award categories. Event sponsors will present a number of unique awards to participants. The sponsors will judge these special competitions.

For example, Tampa Bay Women’s Magazine will choose a winning artist for the best art depicting a Mother and Child, while the Safety Harbor Garden Club will select a winner for the best art that includes flowers in its design. Other sponsors will have categories of their own choosing, and some winners may be chosen in more than one category.

A growing number of area businesses are registering to sponsor the event, which is sure to attract thousands of visitors. Sponsors are still welcome. In kind sponsorships opportunities are also available. Artists, other adults and youngsters who would like to try their hand at chalk art on the sidewalks are encouraged to register soon to reserve a space. Free entertainment will be offered at the Gazebo on Saturday night.

The Bloom N Garden N Chalk Fest is being planned by the Bloom N Chalk Fest Committee with the support and assistance of the City of Safety Harbor, the Downtown Merchants Association and the Chamber of Commerce. Three Safety Harbor residents are serving as co-chairpersons of the event committee. Stacy Roth of Harbour Art, Bobbie Wheeler of The Legal Registry and Glen Caristinos, trustee of Safety Harbor Museum, are busy finalizing plans for the festival.

“This is our first time around with a sidewalk art festival, but we feel it is a natural for the people of Safety Harbor and our neighboring communities who really appreciate art,” says Stacy. “I have never worked on sidewalk art myself, but I am looking forward to the new experience and am calling on my fellow artists to join the fun.” Stacy is a resident of Safety Harbor and a graduate of the Ringling School of Art.

Safety Harbor’s Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic on the days of the Chalk Fest; however, public parking will be available at the Library, the Museum and the Marina. The street is needed for visitors and artists who will be walking back and forth viewing the sidewalk art.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Safety Harbor Museum of Regional History. Organizers are anticipating that this will become an annual event in Safety Harbor. Similar events have been held in Lake Worth for the last 15 years, and Walt Disney World sponsors the Festival of the Masters each year.

The Castle, an Ybor night club for those who share a love for all things dark and dreary, opened in October of 1992. However, on the Castle’s grand opening, it looked nothing like the large, two story Gothic haven it is today. Instead, it was merely just a small saloon created to house a place where friends could come and visit. A modest jukebox furnished the music and most first time Castle patrons simply came dressed in black jeans and t-shirts; a far cry from today’s scene at the well known club. In 2009, the Castle is going strong, perhaps, more so than ever. Black Levi jeans have been replaced with Victorian style gowns, laced corsets and vampiric cloaks. There is no longer a jukebox, but instead, two levels of Industrial and Gothic music pumped out by world famous Castle DJs.

There are five sections inside the Castle in which to wander. First, there is the Saloon, which is where it all started. This is still a favorite hot spot for many long time Castle dwellers. The music is old school Goth, with plenty of nostalgic Depeche Mode and Joy Division classics playing. The Saloon is also a great place to sample signature Castle drinks and socialize with friends. Beautiful stone and brick lined walls, candles galore and rich, blood red velvet fabrics adorn this room. Hung tapestries and ornate furniture in the Saloon replicate something you would see in Dracula’s castle. The best part of this room is the famous bar. A running moat flows directly through the center of the bar top, giving the scene downstairs even more character. Just be careful though if you decide to rest your arms or you might get a tad wet. If fresh air is want you crave, there is an outdoor patio right outside the Saloon. Wooden benches line the perimeter of the patio while overhead, there is a movie screen. Hanging down from a large, shady tree is a candle lit chandelier. A DJ spins tunes here, providing the ultimate outdoor dance floor. In days past, there was also a fire pit out on the Castle’s patio. On cool crisp nights, Goths could gather around a crackling fire and smoke their clove cigarettes. A dance around the fire underneath the stars was a magical escape from everyday reality. The Castle’s main attraction, however, is upstairs in the Main Hall or dance floor. Wolfsheim’s “The Sparrows and the Nightingales,” a Gothic favorite, blasts out from the speakers, while state of the art lighting flashes over the original oak dance floor, exposing a sea of black. At the Castle, dance is an art form. Everyone’s style is unique and expressive. The club patrons aren’t the only ones you will see dancing. On three elevated podiums strategically placed around the dance floor, professional Castle dancers entertain the crowds. Scantily clad female dancers in fish nets and latex, wiggle and gyrate to the heavy beats of hard hitting Industrial and Techno. If you are more of the wallflower type, no worries, as there are plenty of soft, velvet couches and chairs to cozy up on. Scenes from B-rated horror movies play out on large, overhead screens. Stained glass, Gothic arched windows don’t allow in much light from the outside world, but there is plenty of glow from flickering candle votives. There is a boastful 120 feet of bar, the top made up of over 1,000 hand cut Dahl DeVare glass tiles. The adjacent Red Room is an intimate escape from the loud, pulsating music and crowds of the Main Hall. The Red Room is exactly that, red. An intimate setting that allows one to snuggle up to their Gothic sweetheart. There is always a heady smell of Dragon’s Blood incense and yes, there are more candles. Finally, there is the Castle’s newest addition, the Dungeon. Fairly mysterious, the Dungeon is only open for events and private parties. It is an enticing room full of forbidden desires and temptations. Luxuriously sinful is a good way to describe the Dungeon. Basically, it’s nirvana for the glamorous dominatrix.

The Castle’s walls are shrouded in mystery. Some believe the club has a magical presence. Once you step inside, you can feel it envelope your soul. The scent within the Castle is intoxicating. Patchouli oil, clove cigarettes, smoke from the outside patio fire… ah, heavenly. It’s a familiar perfume to a Goth. You know, those dark and shadowy people who wear lots of black yet always seem to have a rainbow of color in their hair. Goth guys have taught the world that eyeliner and nail polish isn’t just for girls and through their lifestyle, have shown that cemeteries can be like a second home. After all, these people are suicidal, worship the devil and sleep in coffins. It’s no wonder the “normal” folks who walk down 7th Avenue in Ybor (“Seventh People,” as Castle patrons call them), gravitate to the opposite side of the street when a Marilyn Manson clone comes walking by. A simple trip over to the Castle could prove to be total humiliation or harsh ridicule to a Goth. I mean, why shouldn’t it be? These morbid weirdos drink blood and are full of hate and dread. They are death obsessed, depressed club kids who are constantly quoting Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry. And not all goths are teenagers or young adults with Koolaid pink hair. Some are married, have families or are middle aged. ”The Senator,” who is a Castle favorite, is in his 50s and frequents the night club nearly every weekend. He dresses in women’s lingerie that doesn’t leave much to the imagination. An outsider to this eccentric lifestyle may question these people’s ethics and perhaps even their sanity.

Ironically, it may be the “Seventh People” who are the abnormal ones. Castle patrons are misunderstood. Most outsiders see Goths and others who stray from the norm, in a negative way. It is a culture with many attached stereotypes. ”We are all different. We are Christians, Atheists, Jewish… but we are not Satanists,” stated an anonymous Goth. Misconceptions on the Gothic lifestyle involve hurting others and being violent, specifically with Vampirism. To the contrary, Goths are passive and peaceful and identify most with the Victorian romantic period. The Gothic culture originated from England and started in the late 1970s. Most Goths are creative, especially as writers and artists. Some are skilled in fashion and expressing themselves artistically with their fashion choices. ”The Senator,” although not someone you would call Gothic, is such an example. Always dressed to impress in his finest boudoir attire, this well known Castle patron makes his rounds on Friday and Saturday nights. He is recognized by many, adored by most and has intimidated a few. Upon first glance, “The Senator,” who is known to his friends and Castle staff as Mike, is a bit shocking. He wears not much more than just a sheer, lacy teddy with a thong. However, there is a lot more to “The Senator” than just a Victoria Secret’s get-up. Hailing from Long Island, NY, “The Senator” claims that he was actually once shy. Years ago, he had a girlfriend from New Orleans who liked taking pictures of him. Inhibited at first, “The Senator” began to change and started liking exhibitionism. Being naked and having others see him this way didn’t feel wrong or shameful. It was during Mardi Gras one year that “The Senator” was born. ”My girlfriend body painted me and dressed me up in frilly lingerie. I loved cruising into parties and being the center of attention.”

In 1996, the Castle opened its dance floor upstairs and this caught “The Senator’s” attention. For the very first time, “The Senator” walked through the Castle’s large, wooden doors. It was then, that he had found his new home. ”It’s a place where you’re not judged and people are cool,” stated “The Senator.” Castle VJ Rob Pittman and Tracey, a Castle bartender and now Rob’s wife, really got “The Senator” into going to the club. In fact, he would go as often as three to four times a week.

So, where did the nickname, “The Senator,” originate from? ”There were some incidents in the news at one time regarding some of our elected representatives being involved in sex scandals and such. Since I am a bit older than most of the crowd, someone hung a tag on me calling me ’The Senator’ and it stuck.” Well, maybe this guy isn’t a true senator, but he has been called, “The King of Ybor;” a legend of sorts. Some people even come to the Castle just to see Ybor’s royalty. After all, a man’s home is his castle, and home to “The Senator,” is indeed that. So, how does “The Senator,” or better yet, “The King of Ybor” feel about his fame? ”There have been lots of wild times, lots of rumors and stories floating around that I can neither confirm or deny. Suffice to say, that I enjoy being the character that has evolved over the past 12 years and while it’s hard to make it out that much anymore, I still enjoy meeting new people and adding to the ‘legend.’”

Perhaps Castle dwellers shouldn’t be feared or judged. After all, “The Senator” is one of the friendliest people I have met. I also believe that the Goth culture is greatly misunderstood. They live in a culture based in stereotypes which are formed around ignorance and fear. Despite their icy exteriors, Goths are warm hearted. They are a diverse and open minded group who simply resist labels and mainstream ideals. And, maybe, just maybe these heavily powdered, black lipped individuals that are regularly mocked and taunted by the close minded “Seventh People,” are just as “normal” looking as they are at times. Soccer moms and suit clad husbands by day transform into the elusive and sometimes feared Goth at night.

The Castle and its eccentric guests continue to be a place to stop in and see while in Ybor. Some visitors to the club travel from New York City, Los Angeles and even European countries. Going to the Castle is like getting lost in another dimension. Once inside, reality dissolves and the mundane and stressful lives we lead, somehow vanish. It’s a place where you can let your alter ego come out and play. You can dance the night away with the famous Senator. The Castle is a place where you can always be a kid at heart, just like celebrity patron Peter Pan, otherwise known as Randy Constan. And yes, he has the whole Neverland get-up, green tights and all. You can re-enact the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre every February, participate in the annual Zombie party (don’t forget to drench yourself in fake blood before heading in) or join in with the Castle’s beloved Fractured Fairytale Ball. Snow White never looked so grotesque! There’s sometimes a guy dressed as a Ghostbuster who stands by the front door, selling black roses. A young woman wearing a fairy costume throws a handful of “magical” glitter on an unsuspecting friend. At the Castle, it’s Halloween all year long.

The place is indeed magical, uninhibited and highly spirited. Everyone is always happy, smiling and non-judgmental. There is love and peace around each corner. In fact, my friend Michelle even met her future husband here. The staff becomes like a second family to most of the patrons, making it no surprise the Castle has earned such titles as “Best Dance Club” and “Best Bartenders” in Tampa Bay.

So, next time you find yourself in Ybor’s darkest shadows, do not fear. In fact, this is the safest, happiest place to be. Instead, it may be the guy in the light blue polo shirt walking down 7th Avenue, in hopes of finding a date, that turns out to be the one to run from. Who knew preppy could be so terrifying?

*The Castle is open Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays/10:30 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

Each night is a different theme, so keep that in mind before heading off to the club.

Monday is “80s and Beyond” night

Thursday is “Pop ‘N’ Wave” night

Friday is “Communion After Dark” night featuring Coffin Classics which is old school Goth and Industrial music

Saturday is “No Boundaries” night, a good time for people watching and lots of Industrial/Goth music

Sunday is “Burn” night for the gay community

Feel free to check out the Castle’s website at www.castleybor.com or on their MySpace page at www.myspace.com/theyborcastle

Throughout his mind boggling career, Copperfield has: walked through the Great Wall of China, made the Statue Of Liberty Disappear, brought ships back from the Bermuda Triangle, and flew without strings; just to name a few of his feats.

This renowned illusionist comes back to Tampa trying to top his last stunt where he disappeared over a live audience and appeared in Hawaii. I was at this last performance of his and was just amazed at his intense illusions, witty charisma he brings and his flawless stage performance; he easily captures the audience and they leave with a new found respect for magic.

Copperfield doesn’t come to the Tampa Bay area as often as he used to. He has refrained from his yearly television specials, making him more in demand than he ever was. If you get the chance to watch his show live, on January 18th at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center then you are in for a treat. Take your kids, your friends, extended family, what have you because this will be well worth the money.

Local artists and bands are always looking to create new shows and to display their work for your enjoyment. Supporting local art and events helps the community, gives the Tampa Bay area a good reputation for supporting the arts and in most cases, it is 10 times cheaper than going to see a professional. Did you know most local bands can be seen for about $5.00 and most local art shows are around $5.00 to $10.00? What an affordable, family fun afternoon!

Here are some of the updates for local Tampa artists and bands:

16 Second Stare

Angry Tim and the rest of 16 Second Stare donated 10,000 CDs to the troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and other war ridden countries to bring a taste of home, show their appreciation for their work and give them something to relax to and enjoy! The CDs have been distributed and they are receiving lots of great compliments on them.

The day before Thanksgiving, the Top 40 Indicator was released showing 16 Second Stare’s, “Red Carpet Material” title track ranked #34 on the debut. They ranked higher than Beyonce, Daughtry and Little Wayne. They are accompanied on the chart by names like Pink, Britney Spears, Nickelback, Akon, Taylor Swift, David Cook and Rihanna.

Still Life

This past week, Still Life had a minor set back. They lost their bass player. This lady duo now is looking for a replacement. If you are into alternative music and want to rock with this band, give them a hit on MySpace www.myspace.com/stillliferockmusic

Holes and Hearts

This band of brothers has been working tirelessly to get more songs written, perform, and start touring around the United States. They didn’t care if it was a paid gig or a charity and they got their wish. They will be touring to states like California, Ohio, and of course Tampa Bay. Here are some show dates and more will be posting soon. Check out their MySpace page for all the shows and info. Congratulations, HOLES AND HEARTS!

Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, an all-Irving Berlin song score, classy direction by Hollywood vet Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood), VistaVision (the very first feature ever shot in that widescreen format), and ultrafestive Technicolor! Crosby and Kaye are song-and-dance men who hook up, romantically and professionally, with a “sister” act to put on a Big Show to benefit the struggling ski-resort lodge run by the beloved old retired general of their WWII Army outfit. Crosby is cool, Clooney is warm, Kaye is goofy, and Vera-Ellen is leggy. Songs include: “Sisters” (Crosby and Kaye do their own drag version, too), “Snow,” “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep,” and more. Christmas would be unthinkable without White Christmas.

Perhaps the most beloved American film, Frank Capra’s masterwork deserves its status as a feel-good communal event, but it is also one of the most fascinating films in the American cinema, a multilayered work of Dickensian density. Earnest do-gooder George Bailey (James Stewart) recognizes his life as wonderful and truly rich, even in its humdrum and bleak nature, only after suffering many hardships, mishaps and fateful trials. He is given encouragement through a fateful meeting with a whimsical, endearing, trainee-angel named Clarence (Henry Travers), who shows him just how bleak the world would be without him. Get out your hankies and listen for ringing bells: this is one family Christmas tradition you don’t want to miss.

The Extra Terrestrial, will be coming to Tampa’s own Al Lopez Park November 1st for a free screening.

E.T. captured a generation and has been quoted as “one of the best movies ever.” It’s one of those movies you can watch over and over again with your family and never get tired of. I doubt there is anyone that hasn’t seen it, but if you haven’t, its a must see.

The movie is about an alien who crashes to Earth, and desperately tries to get back to his home. Throughout the way, he finds a family and befriends their young boy (Elliott) who wants to help him get back to his family where ever he came from. The bond is so strong that they forever are intertwined, which almost kills them both as the Alien Task Force tries to probe the ailing E.T. Finally, Elliott gets E.T. home by breaking away from the captivity.

The movie defined the 80s, and was the spring board to Drew Barrymore’s successful career. She was 8, I believe, when she appeared as the sister to Elliott (Henry Thomas), who helps him take care of E.T.

If you want to take your family to this event the information is as follows:

Date: November 1, 2008
When: Gates open at 5:00 PM, Film starts at 7:00 PM
Where: Al Lopez Park – 4810 N. Himes Ave.
Cost: Free

Since then we watched this once beautiful building, renowned for having one of the best ballrooms, fall to vandalism and neglect. A building that once put Tampa on the map with it’s famous cliental was crying for help yet nobody listened… until 2005 when Antonios Markopoulous bought the distraught hotel for 6 million dollars. Mr Markopoulos’s vision is to restore the decaying building back into a luxury hotel that will stand apart from the rest of the skyscrapers in town.

The last time I was downtown Tampa , the sign at the top of the hotel had missing letters, the windows were cracked, some were missing and had been replaced with graffiti covered wood, and the smell of mold and decay seeped through the cracks in the doors. This past week, I saw a brand new sign sitting on top of this historic hotel, windows replaced and the old marquee looking better. The construction has begun and soon, hopefully by 2010 the historic hotel will be back to its glory days. The hotel will not only add to the redevelopment of downtown but it will also add to the preservation of Tampa’s history, and help keep an artistic building alive.

It would have been a shame for this wonderful piece of Tampa’s history to be leveled to a pile of rubble. For instance when it opened they didn’t even use trucks, they had horse drawn carriages that they rode to the fire. Something we would never know had this building been destroyed. It took a few concerned citizens and the help of the county government to make sure this landmark stayed a part of the downtown heritage. Now its run as a non-profit 501c3 organization.

With five years of work, timeless restoration and running on donated funds the Tampa Fire Museum opened its doors to the public. Today, you can walk around and see some of the tools the firemen would use, the clothing they wore in the 20s to 60s compared to today. Go further inside and you can see the “watch out booth” where a worker would sit inside and listen for dispatches, currently its hooked up to the real 911 call center to replicate what those working the booth would hear. When you come to the old engine room where the fire engines were stored, you will see one of those classic fire poles the men would frantically slide down upon the call of duty, but also look down at the ground to see the scratch marks of the old horse drawn fire carriages. The real observer will look at the doors and realize, they are not garage doors at all, they slide open, similar to a stall would for a horse, and in the rear of the engine room you will see a sink, dirty and full of soot, the men used to wash up with after their fire fighting day was over. It still works and you can wash in the same basin those heroes of yesterday did.

Wander on upstairs to the second floor and see the old bunkers where the men lived waiting for the call of duty; the wood floors were painstakingly restored, but all original, which is now a banquet hall. Downstairs to the back, they have a memorial room to those heroes who died to save the lives and structures of their fellow citizens.

This museum is free to visit but donations are welcome. They are open Tuesday to Thursday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. They have more artifacts to fill the museum but they will come as more donations roll in to help offset the costs. The museum does host birthday parties, banquets and other social events. Its the proud home to the second largest Gasparilla party in Tampa each year too.

This is a great place for the young child dreaming of being a fire-fighter, or someone who may have worked in this building to come remember the good ole days. Its located next door to the current fire rescue station so you can still see the trucks and hear the sirens as they race to save lives. Come experience the history saved to honor those who saved our lives.

It’s the Brooksville Heritage Museum / May-Stringer House.

This attraction has two sides, a fun side for the whole family, and a dark side fit for adults over the age of 18. By day, the house is a representation of life back in the 1840s, and one of the first houses settled in Brooksville under the Florida Settlers Act, which gave settlers 160 acres to use as long as they reside in Florida. It’s also filled with wonderful antiques and history from around Brooksville, making it the Brooksville Heritage Museum. By night: a real haunted house for those interested in the paranormal.

Historic Museum by Day

The day tour talks about the home and all the artifacts inside. It was the former home of the Mays’. After the deaths of Mr. May’s wife and two daughters, he moved away, and the house was next inhabited by Dr. Stringer. Dr. Stringer re-designed the house in the unique fashion it now remains, with the tower, because he wanted to have the largest home in the area. Stringer also made the 7 gables to represent the “House of Seven Gables,” something he always admired. After his family moved out, the place was abandoned, and looters destroyed most of the home. The house was later restored to its current condition by the city of Brooksville. They reopened the house as a heritage museum of Brooksville’s past.

The house has a replica one-room school house, a doctor’s room containing medicines and tools typical of what Dr. Stringer would have used on his patients, a telephone/telegraph room, a war room decked with U.S. Military uniforms from the Civil War to World War II, and so much more

The museum offers a guided tour, that lasts around an hour. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children, Tuesday to Saturday from 12:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. The tour will give you the history of the home as well as Brooksville’s great past. All money goes toward the upkeep up of the home.

By Night… the Hauntings

Due to its grim past with death the house is considered by one of the most haunted places in Florida; the May’s lost 3 people in the home, his two daughters and his wife giving birth. Dr. Stringer used the house as a sanatorium during the days before hospitals were around, so many of the terminally ill patients died miserable deaths from causes like Small Pox, Yellow Fever, Scarlett Fever, and others. The home was also the scene of the first “drive by” shooting in Hernando County (actually “ride by” because the crime was committed on horseback). It’s also said that a WWI soldier returned from war to marry his fiance, only to find that she had married another man when he was away; he then went upstairs and was said to have hung himself in the master bedroom. That claim can’t be proven so it’s only a rumor that may or may not have some truth to it. The May-Stringer house is said to have 8 spirits who reside in the dwelling.

The tour lasts 2 hours! Starting with a history tour of the house concentrating on the most active rooms, they give you more information to the secrets the house holds than you get during the day. In the second hour, you are released into small groups to pick rooms and do seances and readings.

This tour has an age limit: nobody under is 18 allowed. It costs $20.00 per person and reservations are required. The tour starts at 6:00 P.M. and is offered Friday to Sunday only. The tours will be canceled for groups less than 6.

I personally took both of these tours, the daytime and haunted tours and found them extremely interesting and educational. The house is a work of art in itself and the EVP’s caught during the haunt were phenomenal. For the price, I highly recommend trying these tours and help support the Hernando County Preservation of old homes and history.

On Wednesday at 10:56 pm, he will perform his last televised act, live, at the Spyglass Resort in Clearwater, which is set to be imploded — with Criss Angel inside. The act is intense and the escape must be meticulously planned. Angel must first escape from police-issued stainless steel Smith-Wesson handcuffs, pick three door locks, and run up four flights of stairs to the roof. Once on the roof, he must grab a rope ladder dangling from a helicopter which will fly him within 1000 feet of the building for safety before the detonators explode, imploding the hotel. He must do this all with 4 minutes. Criss says his goal is to do it within 2 minuets and 30 seconds to have a “safe” act.

Succeed: he will take his place among the illusionist greats; fail: and he will be covered under 4,500 tons of concrete and meeting the real angels. Either way, an estimated 10,000 people will be on Clearwater beach to witness a miraculous escape or grotesque death of a magical icon.

The stage is set, the anticipation rises as the last ever Mindfreak show will be filmed right in our own backyard. If you can’t make it to the beach, you can watch the stunt LIVE on A&E at 10:00 p.m.

They say “Red Bull gives you wiiings”, and we’re going to put that to the test. This Saturday, July 19, the Red Bull Flugtag comes to Downtown Tampa for a fantastic day of home made flying machines getting launched high over the river, and eventually plummeting into the water. You absolutely must come out and see this no tickets required, FREE event.

For the teams the rules are simple. Make your plane fly the farthest with: no engines or energy sources other than human-power, no more than 30 feet in width and no more than 450 pounds including it’s pilot. Other than that, the 40 Flugtag teams are given the freedom to build their aircraft with any shape, material or theme that they choose. Each team will take a turn pushing their glider off of a 30 foot high platform over the river and then try to pilot the glider as far as possible. Currently, the longest flight is 195 feet and was accomplished 7 years ago in Austria. On top of trying to fly 196 feet, each pilot must also avoid nose diving straight into the water. The ideal landing would be a gentle, belly-down landing. After speaking with some of the participating teams it sounds like most of them will not be test flying their craft until the big day, and some predict that they may end up nose diving or even flipping upside down.

As if watching 40 home made flying machines fall into the water isn’t entertaining enough, a celebrity panel of judges are going to make sure the day is even better. Not only are the contestants being judged on the longest flight, but also on their teams showmanship on stage, the aesthetic creativity of their craft and a “fan favorite” vote, which will require fans to use text messaging to vote for their favorite team (much like American Idol). Some of the teams we caught up with are planning on winning over the crowd with short productions before their flights, such as skits and dances that fit with their glider’s theme. At this event we’re going to see gliders that look like a giant flip flop, a pig, a speedboat, a furry boot and even a flying Cuban sandwich.

Flugtag is a German word for “Flying Day”, and is pronounced ‘Floog-Tog’. The first Red Bull Flugtag was hosted in Vienna, Austria in 1991. The competitions are now held all around the world. This will be the first time it has come to Tampa. This year there will also be an event hosted in Chicago and Portland.

The ramp and seating area will be near City Park in front of the Tampa Convention Center. The event will be completely free and the gates will open at 11am, the first flight will begin at 1pm. There will be other entertainment throughout the morning, and there may also be one or two Red Bull vendor’s setup, all though that is not confirmed!

It’s that time of year again. The most skilled band on the radio is coming to town. Dave Matthews Band will be in Tampa on July 9 and West Palm Beach on the 10 and 11. DMB is arguably one of the most exciting live bands to watch, partially because of the extended solos and unplanned jamming, partially because of an incredibly loyal and family-like fan base. Infact, Dave Matthews fans are quickly becoming the next generation of “parrot heads,” known for great tailgating parties sometimes days before the show. It really is an event any music appreciator should experience at least once.

Buy a ticket, get a free DMB itunes album! This summer tour is going to be recorded each night (40 cities) and in September the best performances of each song, the coolest moments, and the funniest mistakes will be hand picked and make up the free album. Each ticket buyer will receive a code for the album in September via e-mail. Hopefully the show you attend, and your signature scream, will make it on the record.

The Tampa concert will be held at the Ford Amphitheatre on the 9.
The West Palm Beach shows will be held at the Cruzan Ampitheatre on both nights, 11 and 12.

Tickets are $67.00 for general admission or $32 for the lawn seats.
For all three shows the doors will open at 5:30 and the opening act, Gomez, will begin at 7:00. Gomez may or may not appeal to you. They are a bluesy/indie rock band born and raised in England, bearing very little resemblance to DMB. Before Gomez begins, make sure that you don’t miss solo artist Matt Hires on the side stage as he belts out fresh, earnest songs.

Clearwater Celebrates America

This will be Coachman Park’s 18th celebration. The event starts Thursday, the 3rd at 4pm with live performances by jazz artists Paul Brown and Eric Darius. It continues on the 4th running from 2 to 10 pm, with entertainment provided by the Mostly Pops Orchestra and John & Mary Wilson. There will be a crafts show and activities for children. I also urge you to visit Rita’s Italian Ice to cool off with one of the absolute best treats in town.

St. Pete Fireworks at the Pier

The fireworks start at 9pm. This event is notorious for launching their fireworks much closer to the crowd than any other show in the area. All aerial explosions aside, the view of the water is equally impressive, as it will be completely filled with lit up boats. There will be vendors set up all over the grass area serving food and drinks, as well as free concerts which begin at 2pm. Notably, the SOCOM paratroopers will be landing in nearby North Straub Park at 7pm.

Brandon Blast

The rockets fly at 9pm. This event actually takes place at the Brandon Town Center mall, so grab your Chick-Fil-A combo from the food court and head to the seating area to catch Brandon Blast in its 5th year. WQYK 99.5 will be hosting the event and providing entertainment. There will be inflatable games for kids in front of Sears. Come a little earlier and even get some shopping done!

Independence Day Channel Side

The fun starts at 2pm with activities for the kids like face painting and balloons. 93.3FLZ and the Tampa Tribune will be sponsoring the event. Channelside is a completely different experience from most other firework venues, because there is a plethora of activities to enjoy before the 9pm show. Enter into another world full of colors and creatures at The Florida Aquarium, bowl a couple of strikes at Splitsville, browse through a gallery of fine art at Paintings of the World, grab an icecream cone at Cold Stone Creamery or catch a flic at the Channelside 9 movie theatre. There are also just too many good restaurants and clubs to mention, so absolutley plan on enjoying dinner there.

Fireworks at MOSI

I’ve heard friends rave about this event. To get in it costs $225 per person or $400 for a couple. The evening starts with a sit-down dinner under the “stars”, which takes place inside the IMAX planetarium. Dinner is followed by dancing to a live performance by Spirit of Freedom. Finally, the fireworks are viewed from the rooftop of the IMAX dome, with a lit-up downtown Tampa skyline as the backdrop. Cocktails start at 6:30 and dinner is at 7:30. Dress up.

Treasure Island King Gators 4th of July Spectacular

98 Rock will be out there all day hosting and providing live music. Alcohol and coolers are welcome. The fireworks will begin at 9pm. I was there two years ago, this is the best beachfront fireworks display in the Tampa Bay Area. Great, fun loving crowd and not many children.

Red, White and Kaboom

Lakeland’s big Independence Day celebration, which will run from 6pm till the explosions stop. Central Florida Eurocars will be exhibited around the Promenade at Lake Mirror. There will be a lot of talent on stage between jazz guitarist Les Sabler and local favorites, Citiheat. At 9pm the fireworks will begin, right over Lake Mirror.

Hernando Sportsman’s Club Machine Gun Shoot

Here YOU make the fireworks, while pretending to be Rambo. Bring your own machine gun if you have one, or for the vast majority of us, rent one of those supplied by the Club. The shooting starts at 9:30am in the Chassahowizka Wildlife Management Area, near Weeki Wachee. $20 if you want to do the shooting, $2 if you just want to watch. There are typically entire cars, 80 gallon barrels, telephone poles, washing machines and all kinds of other objects down range worth seeing completely destroyed.

4th of July at Busch Gardens

Chubby Checker and the Wildcats will perform, immediately followed by the firework display. There will also be entertainment from ventriloquist Kevin Johnson. The special entertainment starts at 6:45pm and the fireworks begin around 8:30pm. The park will be open all day, and of course there is a thing or two to do there as well.

Independence Fest

Rock out this Fourth at the State Theatre in Downtown St. Pete. The concert lineup will include Car Bomb Driver, Military Junior, Grey Market, Have Gun Will Travel, and Mouse Fire. These are some of the best indie and alt-rock bands the town has to offer, all sharing the same stage. I’ve seen each one of these bands and would recomend them ALL. The show starts at 8pm and goes late. It cost $8 to get in the door, or $5 if you have a voter ID. (how political.)

Dunedin ‘Hometown USA’ Fireworks Display

The fireworks should blend right in with all the tie-die shirts. Be prepared to be thrown back 40 years with the ‘60s Groove and The Shaguars (who I can personally say have the best false-British accents I’ve ever heard. They play a mean Beatles tune as well!) It will go down at Knology Park. There will be food and beverage vendors, so no coolers.

His new act, “No Apologies World Tour,” has been getting rave reviews and has plenty of new content with topics touching (and slamming) politics, culture, and anything else that he deems worthy of stabbing fun at.

Tickets are $55.50-$99.50 and can be purchased at TBPAC, tbpac.org, or 813.229.7827.
