Thrill St. Pete

It’s that time of year again.  Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” plays regularly on the radio and the living dead walk the streets.  And this year, zombies seem to be bigger and more exciting than ever.  Society has become somewhat paranoid about the end of the world and some of us have even started to prepare for a potential zombie apocalypse.  The hit movie, Zombieland, has wowed audiences across the nation and zombie pub crawls are becoming all the rage.  It’s fun, afterall, to sip down a few beers while your flesh is falling off.  So, with all this walking dead stuff, it’s no wonder “Thrill the World” is so popular.

“Thrill the World” is a simultaneous dance routine set to Michael Jackson’s beloved zombie song, “Thriller,” that takes place worldwide in an attempt to break a record.  Different cities all across the nation, and throughout various countries, will participate in the zombie dance.  St. Petersburg, Florida will be hosting its very own “Thrill the World” this year down at The Pier on Oct. 24th, 8:30 pm.  The event is already getting tons of attention and seems to be growing everyday in its group participation.  Hundreds of dancers and volunteers will be making “Thrill the World” one of St. Petersburg’s most talked about events of the year.  After the dance, be sure to stick around for more brain eating, flesh rotting festivities.  Captain Al’s Waterfront Grille and Bar, down at The Pier, will be hosting a dance party after the event and there will also be a zombie pub crawl through the downtown district.

If you plan to go, you may want to get there early to grab a parking spot and a good place to watch the zombies strut their stuff.

For more information on “Thrill the World 2009″ visit the website at www.thrillstpete.com.

The event will also include a food drive to benefit the St. Petersburg Free Clinic Food Bank, so be sure to bring a canned or packaged food item.

Synopsis

Race. Religion. Sexuality. The topics you’re never supposed to discuss in polite conversation have become the focus of this series of monologues written by Adrienne Nadeau.

The Studio@620 has culled Tampa Bay’s young talent to find provocative and compelling performers. Boasting new, fresh actors and experienced veterans of stage and screen, our cast is as diverse as the monologues.

Capturing the stories of a Black man who complains that the stereotypes of African Americans don’t reflect who he is, a Muslim girl standing her ground against a lecture on the futility of her religion, an Athiest sanding out flyers on the street corner, a man questioning his sexuality, a woman explaining the truth of bisexuality, the voices merge to combat the stereotypes of America today.

Adrienne Nadeau wrote her monologue series as a student in the University of Tampa’s class on alternative writing. Performed as a stage reading for the University of Tampa’s Honors College, the collection won praise from professors and students alike.

The Studio@620 eagerly picked up the collection and Jeffrey Skatza, the curator for The Pen Is Mightier, is codirecting with Adrienne Nadeau. This unique performance is sure to be remembered as a groundbreaking event for Tampa Bay theatre. The pieces will make you think, challenge your beliefs, and make you question your own views. While the stories might seem unbelievable at times, every piece is based on a story from a Florida resident. Adrienne admits she didn’t have to look far to find inspiration.

The voices of the characters are sincere and evocative, and the talented cast adds passion and conviction to their pieces. Proceeds of Stereotypes In America will go to The Warrior Woman Inc., a local non-profit organization dedicated to bringing empowering writing workshop to teens and at-risk youth. Over $500 in merchandise and gift certificates from Blue Martini, Build-A-Bear, the Tampa Improv, and more will be raffled off for additional donations to the organization.

Fairy Tale Magic in Tampa

In a land far, far away armored knights clash lances, wizards cast spells and gypsies dance to magical beats.  Villagers in dust covered garments peddle, while jewel adorned royalty walk with heads held high.  Suddenly, a familiar sound is heard.  ”Hark, thy cell phone ringth!”

Yes, it’s that time of year again when modern day Tampa meets the rustic, medieval town of Fittleworth.  Located in North Tampa just outside of MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry), the Bay Area Renaissance Festival celebrates its 30th year and seems to be stronger than ever, despite the fragile economy.  Once you walk through the gates, you are immediately transported back to the days of King Henry VIII and his beautiful queen, Catherine Parr.  The festival is a magical realm of maypoles and minstrels; merlins and merchants.  Ethereal skinned fairies prance and skip amongst festival guests, and impromptu sing-a-longs take place around nearly every corner.   This medieval land is a place where you can go and escape the everyday stresses of our current world.  At the Bay Area Renaissance Festival,  also known as BARF (its unappealing acronym), happiness is abundant.  There is also no shortage of unusual characters that are regularly seen wandering the festival grounds.  Look for trolls, storytellers, jousting knights, a royal court and villagers.  One of the most famous villagers may be Christophe the Insultor, better known as Christopher Buelhman, a talented actor and writer based in St. Petersburg, FL.  Buelhman wanders the festival, insulting people for money.  Let’s just say, the more money you give to Buelhman, the worse the insult.  As a festival patron of many years, I have become a huge fan of Christophe the Insultor.  Trust me, the guy can be cruel but he is highly creative and is surely a festival staple.  To take Buelhman’s heat, you either need to be equipped with a good sense of humor or a strong brew.

“Lords” will delight in watching beautiful gypsies gyrate their bodies to enchanting melodies, while “ladies” will find it hard not to stare at those sexy medieval dudes in skin stretching tights.  One of the most famous pair of legs at the Bay Area Renaissance Festival belongs to Randy Constan, better known as Peter Pan.  Constan is a regular to the Tampa festival and spends his time while there “pixie dancing to the sounds of harps and flutes.”  Constan, who portrays the fantasy character of Peter Pan, dresses in the signature green tunic, tights, feather cap and elf like shoes.  There never seems to be a lack of elaborate and theatrical styled costumes at the festival.  Some patrons, in addition to the festival characters, come adorned in medieval garb allowing them to blend in with the atmosphere.

In addition to the many eccentric characters, there is a plethora of vendors which make up the medieval marketplace.  Tents line the festival grounds, each filled with different goods.  Some vendors sell goddess scented perfumes, potions and incense.  Choose a handmade oil to lure a lover, or bring home a fragrant candle that you may have helped to create.  Wanna really get into a fairy tale like mood?  Why not get your hair braided like a princess or beautify your arms with henna ink.  Get fitted for elf ears, have your fortune told by a crystal ball or try squeezing yourself into a laced corset after lunch.

If shopping isn’t your cup of  tea, there are many other great ways to spend your day at the festival.  Entertaining actors preform throughout the day on various wooden stages.  Some of my “can’t miss” favorite shows include live armored contact jousting, the washing well wenches, and the ever famous mud show (don’t wear white… you’ve been warned). There is also a new act this year featuring Lady Mesmer, a professional comedic hypnotist, who encourages crowd participation. Uh-oh.

Children are definitely welcomed; in fact, every year there is something called “Festival Friday,” which is an educational day for participating Bay Area schools.  There are medieval themed rides and games, not to mention the Children’s Realm.  This is where little girls can become princesses for the day and boys can channel their inner pirates.

If a cup of English tea is what you need, you may sit down with Queen Catherine Parr and exchange royal gossip.  And be sure not to miss out on the character parade.  Each and every day, the villagers and royal court will walk through the festival, waving and smiling at guests.

The Bay Area Renaissance Festival is certainly a place you will never leave hungry.  Turkey legs are the most sought after item on the festival’s menu.  In fact, over 30,000 pounds of turkey legs were ordered this year!  Scotch eggs (a hard boiled egg wrapped in sausage and coated in bread crumbs, then deep fried) are also a favorite and tend to sell out quickly.  On a cooler day at the festival, one might delight in soup served in a bread bowl.  For a hearty English lunch, shepherd’s pie comes to mind or perhaps a plate of fish and chips.  And for a lighter meal, try the sauteed garlic mushrooms.  A runner-up to this dish would be a bowl of tempura battered vegetables.  For a snack, pick up some sugar coated nuts.  The smell of these alone is olfactory heaven.

There are also plenty of traditional style foods available at the festival such as quesadillas, roasted corn and burgers (try the portobello mushroom kind).  The kids will love eating dino nuggets.  Dinosaur sure tastes like chicken… oh wait, it is chicken. And what’s a festival without the booze?  Black and Tan, a beer that is made from a blend of pale ale and a dark beer such as a porter or stout, is very popular.  The Snakebite (a drink made from hard cider and lager beer) is also often requested and although its venom isn’t poisonous, it is certainly strongly felt.  The honey mead’s sweet nectar is intoxicating to sip, making it a must to try.  You can even purchase a leather or pewter drinking mug at the festival and use that instead of a “not so authentic” plastic cup.  The Feast of Fantasy is a food event that some festival patrons choose to do instead of the traditional booths.  With a special ticket, you are not only admitted to the festival, but you also get a sit down, six course feast fit for a king.  Two hours of entertainment and a unique gift are also included.

With all the fine food and drink at the festival, there is no surprise the amount of merriment and love which abounds.  Certain festival guests may even be lucky enough to witness a fairy tale wedding taking place on the grounds.  There are some newlyweds that couldn’t think of a more romantic place to exchange their vows.  Happily ever after?  Well, to each his own, I say.

The Bay Area Renaissance Festival is not only love struck, but it is also star struck.  This year the festival is holding auditions for the movie, “All’s Faire in Love,” starring Christina Ricci and Cedric the Entertainer.  If you have ever dreamed of being an extra in a movie, you may now get your chance by just attending the festival.

Each weekend the festival hosts a different theme, so don’t expect to take home the same experience twice.  On February 21st to the 22nd, which was the first weekend of the festival,”Highland Fling” was the theme.  Just picture a lot of men walking around in kilts. From February 28th to March 1st was the “Wine, Chocolate and Song” weekend; the perfect place for a romantic date. On March 7th to the 8th, “A Silk Road:  Discover the Riches,” there will be a pet fest, belly dancing and a juggling competition. A weekend of “Shamrocks and Shenanigans” will take place on March 14-15th, in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.  Just watch out for those naughty little Leprechauns!  On the weekend of March 21st to the 22nd, the theme is “Italian Masters,” which includes many interesting inventor exhibits.  ”The High Seas Adventure” is set to sail on March 28th to the 29th.  It is biker weekend, so bikers (and pirates, of course) are welcome.  ”The Spanish Expedition,” April 4th to the 5th, concludes the Bay Area Renaissance Festival.  There will be mass vow renewals, Spanish food, a flower festival and a longbow competition.

So, for all ye peasants and fools out there, it’s time come out to Tampa’s best known festival.  It’s a place where there are plenty of overflowing bosoms, long haired men and sparkly fairy wings.  Just beyond the gates, modern day language changes to Old English and technology no longer exists.  Just be sure to bring good walking shoes and your sense of humor.  After all, where else can you pay money to have your best friend insulted and ogle a man in purple tights, while your face is covered in turkey grease?

*The Bay Area Renaissance Festival has had its gates opened since February 21st and will continue to do so until April 5th.

Call To Artists – Bloom N Chalk Fest

Calling all artists! Artists who work in all types of media are invited to try their hands at Sidewalk Art during the first annual Bloom N Garden N Chalk Fest in Safety Harbor. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, and from 10 to 4 on Sunday, March 29 with a variety of valuable prizes to be awarded during a ceremony at the Safety Harbor Gazebo at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Artists may register on line at www.bloomnchalkfest.com. The deadline to reserve a space in the event is Friday, March 6. Local families are also welcome to pre-register and join the fun during the festival. There are no fees for participation, and chalk will be provided to all of the registered artists without charge.  There will also be a Kids Chalk Garden to allow kids to be creative.

Lee Jones, president of the Florida Chalk Artists Association, will be joined by some other Florida Chalk Artists in creating amazing chalk art during the festival. Jones, who has participated in Chalk Art Festivals across the nation, will also be in Safety Harbor on Saturday, March 14, from 10 to 1 at the Rigsby Center in Safety Harbor to present a free clinic for interested participants who want to know more about techniques involved in sidewalk art as they plan their projects for the upcoming event.

A reception for artists and sponsors will be held at Syd Entel Galleries on Friday, March 27 from 6-9 pm to kick off the opening of the event. As a special incentive to participating artists, Syd Entel Galleries has agreed to provide exhibit space for a limited number of works to be sold and promoted by each participating professional artist during the Festival.

Participants also will be treated to a continental breakfast each morning of the festival as well as free refreshments during the day. In addition to a number of prizes, three art school scholarships will be awarded during the event. The scholarships are to Full Sail University, Ringling School of Art and Design and the University of South Florida School of Art and History.

Local artists Zoran Peshich and Stacy Roth of Harbour Arts were first among Safety Harbor artists to sign up to participate. This event features a number of award categories.   Event sponsors will present a number of unique awards to participants. The sponsors will judge these special competitions.

For example, Tampa Bay Women’s Magazine will choose a winning artist for the best art depicting a Mother and Child, while the Safety Harbor Garden Club will select a winner for the best art that includes flowers in its design. Other sponsors will have categories of their own choosing, and some winners may be chosen in more than one category.

A growing number of area businesses are registering to sponsor the event, which is sure to attract thousands of visitors. Sponsors are still welcome.  In kind sponsorships opportunities are also available. Artists, other adults and youngsters who would like to try their hand at chalk art on the sidewalks are encouraged to register soon to reserve a space. Free entertainment will be offered at the Gazebo on Saturday night.

The Bloom N Garden N Chalk Fest is being planned by the Bloom N Chalk Fest Committee with the support and assistance of the City of Safety Harbor, the Downtown Merchants Association and the Chamber of Commerce. Three Safety Harbor residents are serving as co-chairpersons of the event committee.  Stacy Roth of Harbour Art, Bobbie Wheeler of The Legal Registry and Glen Caristinos, trustee of Safety Harbor Museum, are busy finalizing plans for the festival.

“This is our first time around with a sidewalk art festival, but we feel it is a natural for the people of Safety Harbor and our neighboring communities who really appreciate art,” says Stacy. “I have never worked on sidewalk art myself, but I am looking forward to the new experience and am calling on my fellow artists to join the fun.”  Stacy is a resident of Safety Harbor and a graduate of the Ringling School of Art.

Safety Harbor’s Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic on the days of the Chalk Fest; however, public parking will be available at the Library, the Museum and the Marina. The street is needed for visitors and artists who will be walking back and forth viewing the sidewalk art.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Safety Harbor Museum of Regional History. Organizers are anticipating that this will become an annual event in Safety Harbor. Similar events have been held in Lake Worth for the last 15 years, and Walt Disney World sponsors the Festival of the Masters each year.

David Copperfield Comes To Tampa

frontdoor_davidIt has been two years since David Copperfield, master of illusion, performed in the Tampa Bay area; but now he has reappeared for a much anticipated return.

Throughout his mind boggling career, Copperfield has: walked through the Great Wall of China, made the Statue Of Liberty Disappear, brought ships back from the Bermuda Triangle, and flew without strings; just to name a few of his feats.

This renowned illusionist comes back to Tampa trying to top his last stunt where he disappeared over a live audience and appeared in Hawaii.  I was at this last performance of his and was just amazed at his intense illusions, witty charisma he brings and his flawless stage performance; he easily captures the audience and they leave with a new found respect for magic.

Copperfield doesn’t come to the Tampa Bay area as often as he used to.  He has refrained from his yearly television specials, making him more in demand than he ever was.  If you get the chance to watch his show live, on January 18th at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center then you are in for a treat.  Take your kids, your friends, extended family, what have you because this will be well worth the money.
